Description
This is something a bit different....oh wait, no...it's not.
ha! more body-less headsActually, it is a little different, because I was hired to alter an existing headsculpt for Sideshow's Iron Man Mark 1 maquette, sculpted exquisitely by Erick Sosa and his team. This thing is unbelievably intricate and wonderful:

The licensor wanted changes to the Robert Downey Jr. headsculpt, so I was hired to simply redo the face. I was given the existing headsculpt and retooled everything except the helmet and neck strap.
It was a very fun piece to work on, and an honor to get to be a small part of an already beautiful statue!

The whole piece is dead on, but man those eyes
are uncanny.....
I would imagine this piece would be particularly
hard since the recent popularity of Downey Jr.
and our own recollection and memory of his likeness,
but you really nailed it...
I seriously love his intense, piercing gaze.....
....very powerful emotions captured here.

I really enjoyed sculpting him. He has a really unique face, and you can see the 'hard living' in it, so that helps.

accomplishements, as well as defeats.
Unfiltered honesty in the purest form...
Have you ever heard from the actors
for which you have sculpted?
They probably could be the harshest,
but certainly the most important crtics.

Most of the criticism and changes I get come from the license holders. I know some actors have a say in what their merchandise looks like, but others don't care, or don't sign anything in their contracts that give them the swaying power.
I don't know if anybody I've sculpted has seen their sculpt! I guess it'd be kind of cool if they have. If it means getting through approvals quicker, though, I'd be plenty fine if they never see them

Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of real scans...Even for small action figures. They look so careless and lacking in life. I would almost prefer less of a likeness if it means getting a sculpt that feels more alive!

Isn't this an amazing piece? I can't get over the intricate detail in the outfit. I can't even begin to figure out how Erick and his team figured it all out.

thanks man! You're still producing amazing stuff all of the time, it's great to see!! I saw some of your recent likenesses and they KILLED me...Christian Bale and Biden! man those are good!! Did you go get your eyes switched out for some magnifying lenses!?
It's always a little strange to be asked to redo something like Tony here...especially odd to resculpt the entire face from your initial sculpt...I felt like I was desecrating the work! but it was also fun to get to be a part of a KILLER statue.

oh ok, so it was a collaboration. Still a really wicked combo, and it wouldn't really sell if you didn't capture the likeness, so it's no small part, it's huge! And the Statue as well! I wish you guys or sideshow makes an articulated version... Hot toys didn't get the proportions right
