Description wax-oil crayons & pencils (greyscale by computer),
June 2nd 1916, a Lewis-gunner from 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles trying to hold his devastated part of the line during the opening stages of battle of Mount Sorrel.

Completely in greyscale due some technological difficulties (the old scanner turned the image into a mixture of pink, blue and green mess, which didn`t look either pretty, realistic or clever). Here is >another example< .

This is my piece for our "Monthly Great War Art Thread" we run in Great War Forum .

LOVE your work. My grandpa was a driver for the R.H. and R.F.A. with the B.E.F. His brother, who was sent over to Canada before the war as a British home child, went on to enlist with the C.E.F. with the 34th Battn. and then into the 5th CRT (which I'd love to see you do a drawing for the railroad troops!) ...both made it home!! Grandpa came over to Canada after the war and went on to have 5 sons, which all but one enlisted in WWII and Korea!! yes, I am bragging!!!

1916 = World War 1, no Degtyaryovs yet invented.
Lewis-gunner obviously uses a Lewis gun a light machine gun design from US, but most widely used by the British Empire.

I love it... the coloring looks so smooth and there's just the right amount of detail. This would be a great illustration, methinks.

It's hard to imagine this being even better in color... the grayscale seems very fitting for the subject, anyway.

Very nice!

will you? thanks! the honour is mine, you do fine work!

His name was james davenport, 15th battalion 48th highlanders/102nd rocky mountain rangers. he used to live in congleton england where my great grandfather knew him, he then emigrated to canada and answered the call when the war started. he was amongst the first to go over, (he may have been in a patrol during the night, i cant remember) and his batt were cut to pieces, and then shelled by all sides. massive losses as you'd expect. funny thing is, he was an englishman at heart, became a canadian, and wore a kilt into battle... strange.

I have one comic book idea in my sleeve. A big project, and won't be seen for another couple of years, but it's a story of brothers, of which the older goes to France with the 10th Bn CEF and faces the first gas attack of April 22nd 1915, then the next night loses his life during the famous counterattack (attacking along side with the 15th Bn!) to Kitchener's Wood. Just to let you know that the 15th is featured
Younger brother serves in the Newfoundland Regiment and experiences the 1st of July in Somme, Beaumont Hamel (do you know history? Mayb e I have to tell you no more)...

Yes thats him!!!

yes i know my history! ive trodden the fields of beaumont hamel many a time and know its stories, i'm sure your comic book will be excellent!

btw, i know a chap in ypres who wants some illustrations of early war canadians doing, i tried but i couldnt meet what he wanted, but i'm sure you could. i can send you his e-mail if you like.

let me know if you are interested because he was willing to pay as i recall.

ps whats more about james is another relative of mine was in the ksli or middlesex (i cant remember), who went in the day after them. they didnt know each other but its a small world isnt it! he survived that encounter.

we visited his grave on the 90th anniverary of his death this year, put a flag on and poppies, the day before we wathced the sun go down peacefully, while he would have been moving up the line to the sound of shell fire... it was a beautiful sunset for us...

Thanks... now when I think of it, this (completely) B&W-version IS probably little better than the original. Thanks

War is Hell. War is sad.
You've captured the feeling of war in the background very well. It is fabulously drawn. Nice details on the gunner guy too.

Thank you... as history I can say that this particular unit suffered heavily while defending the remains of their trenches (that had ceased to exist due German artillery), out of 4th C.M.R's 702 men only 76 survived (all others either killed or wounded).

awesome drawing pal! how much time did this take?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

tuomaskoivurinne In reply to junkyarddog [2005-06-27 07:33:02 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! As you can see, only the gunner is actually made with crayons and the backround is just plain pencilwork ("underpainting" that was unfinished for the purpose of keeping attention focused where it's intended to be as ~Sainte-Vincient put it earlier)... so not too much time. But I did work pretty much to get the right tone of khaki into that uniform and now it`s not to be seen
