Miyuki and Maho kind of look like Kaskabe and Oguie from Genshiken. That made me sad the they killed Orihara off in the movie.

I did not knw that anime and watched Yamato Reborn a few years ago. But SBY is originally a space opera, so dramatic scenes and events are necessary for the story

Love Yamato Resurrection. Wish they would release it on DVD here in the States. Genshiken is an anime about otaku college students.

I loved that film. 
Don't you hate it when films do that? They have a well-established cast of characters; some you absolutely adore, some you just want to strangle 24/7 and then those who are somewhere in the middle, and then just when you're getting to know, like and sometimes even relate to, and they kill off that character...

Well it's part of the story. Japanese Film and Anime makers are bound themselves to the story in contrary to the Hollywood ones.
