Description EDIT: Thanks so much to those who pointed out the crazy "cat-assisted" typo Edited some of the other details too while I was at it. I haven't gotten round to reading all your comments but so far I love reading all your ideas and your 40k fan feedback (and some wicked story ideas to boot)! Thanks especially to the fans for tolerating and even encouraging my heretical ideas

I've always wondered what it would be like if the Imperial Guard managed to develop a relatively cheaper, weaker but still highly effective multi-role version of the Space Marine armour, and mass produced it.

Within this fantasy of mine, I thought that maybe on the further reaches of Imperium space, a different prototype pattern of power armour would be developed to

a) vastly boost the current performance and survivability levels of conventional IG frontline troops, with a focus on armour/gear modularity, especially commonality between parts so cannibalising for repairs while in the field is easy, and requisitioning spare parts out of field are also cost effective and hassle free.

b) Offer an extended lifetime of service to the Emperor for troops that have been crippled in battle. The IG Tactica armour would be able to accomodate amputees via a electronic gel interface membrane, without need to surgically graft the user to the armour. The armour can also switch to an autonomous combat mode should the wearer be killed, and the onboard tactical AI still functioning, in order to continue the fight.

Another feature of the armour pattern is an integrated second AI and servitor arm system inbuilt into the backpack. This both helps with load-bearing, combat multitasking and construction labour. Each soldier could thus effectively perform the role of a combat engineer, medic and stormtrooper all in one.

And no need for commissars to keep the troops in line, when you have an onboard AI that would gladly take over the reins!

Also for fun, I redesigned the Bolter somewhat so it would have, to my mind, a more straightforward layout and construction. At least the chamber, ejection port and barrel line up (That's been bugging me for years.)

I could imagine Stormtrooper Regiments and the Harkonian Warhawks using Power Armored suits in a role similar to ODST's or even the Mobile Infantry of the Starship Troopers Book.

I know this was posted years ago but... awesome! My only criticism would be... no to AI! xD that'd be massively against Imperial lore, they were fucked by AI once, terribly, and now it's entirely forbidden.

Power armor is cool and all, but I think a mech would fit the guard better like how the tau have their battle suits. The rda amp suit that was used in the film avatar would work perfectly for the imperial guard although I'm sure it would be a lot more fortified and stronger if it were to be used in 40k.

Arandompokemonfan In reply to thatoneguy105 [2016-12-21 14:12:25 +0000 UTC]

Indeed. But combat mechs like that are a lot bigger, and probably more expensive to put together and repair than a robotic suit as big as these ones would be.Β

Imperial Guardsmen in (admittedly weaker) power armor? Chaos be screwed.

Maths for the masses... 1 Space Marine = 500 standard IG
1 Space Marine = 100 Power Armor IG

Over 40 billion IG + Power Armor for each IG = Dead Chaos Legions

Everyone keeps complaining about the "Abominable Intelligence" which is something of an oversight in the fluff our artist wrote, but would it really be that heretical? Many machines today and in the 41st millennium have "AI"; that only means that it is preforming a series of tasks under very specific circumstances outlined in its programming. I believe the Tech Priests refer to this as a "machine spirit." Speaking of the mechanicus, they have an army of robots. If you want to just eliminate the need for computer controlled arms, then this pattern could be utilized by tech marines. After all, those are just skinny servo arms attached to his backpack.

TerranAbassador In reply to BobBobson38 [2016-01-21 11:38:34 +0000 UTC]

There's an implication that a machine spirit is literally a spirit (which wouldn't be out of place in the world of 40k) rather than an AI, basically being the machine's "soul". AIs are sometimes allowed to combine with Machine Spirits (most commonly seen in Space Marine Land Raiders, which can operate, at reduced effectiveness, without a crew), but are most commonly 'shackled' by combining them with human minds, such as in Servitors.

Apparently, vanilla AIs have a tendency to fall to Chaos. For some reason.

The Machine Spirits of Imperial Titans are actually complex enough to develop personalities.

That said, there does seem to be some overlap.

InsectSpray [2014-04-22 09:24:44 +0000 UTC]

The only Issue I can see with this would be the AI. The Imperium banned artificial intelligence before the Horus Heresy!

Abominable Intelligence(A.I. forr short) is a term used by the Adeptus Mechanicus for an adaptive, self-enhancing, factitious intelligence with its own consciousness.

During the Dark Age of Technology, these intelligences rebelled against their human masters, leading to bloody wars. Since that time, and by a personal decree of theΒ Β  Emperor himself, it has been forbidden to fabricate or service those machines that are able to think and act independently.

A.I. is not to be mistaken for the machine spirit that has parallels but basal differences - namely, no ability to enhance itself.

uh..Wind? Salamanders. White Scars. Raven Guard. Space Wolves. Crimson Fists. All chapters known for caring about the PEOPLE of the Imperium. do some research. probably my favorite instance of that is what the Salamander's Chapter Master did to a Captain of the Marines Malovolent after he shelled a refugee camp because Orks had managed to get in. Tu'Shan walked over and punched him clean across the room in front of Marneus Calgar, Dante, Commissar Yarrick... and pretty much every other Imperial leader on Armageddon. Best. Chapter Master. Ever.

WindScar8 In reply to pendraco [2014-03-03 12:01:21 +0000 UTC]

And those instances are few and far between, the opinions of the Marines Malevolent are the ruling sort in the imperium, the Death Korps of Kraig, the black ships, the inquisition, the list goes on. are there good people in the imperium, oh yes, but they are the minority when it comes to people with power, that is sorta the point. The Salamanders are actually my fav former legion chapter. And only the Raptors take my top spot above them because I like the way they fight more. So as i said, some people are looking out for the common citizenry of the Imperium, but they are rare.

pendraco In reply to WindScar8 [2014-03-04 02:25:54 +0000 UTC]

well.... to be fair, the Raptors themselves are a Raven Guard Second Founding. You only really get "Successor" of your Primarch legion. That being said, Being a second founding means the Raptors have a history dating back to just after the Horus Heresy, and got Legion relics and armor and such directly from their parent legion when it split. so, yeah.
