I hate to say that I agree.. The proportions and the facial features of 2018 are more refined. The 2020 face doesn't have the curves. It looks like you wanted to change your style from comics/cartoon to painting and while you nailed the clear, sharp and bold color changes, you swiched to gradual color changes, which might seem a bit mushy. Smooth mushy shadowing is one of beginner digital artists' pitfalls. The comparison is therefore unfair. You are trying something brand new but don't have a gull grasp of it yet. I encourage you to keep at it. What would we be if we didn't stumble a bit every now and then.

Hi! I did this to get some opinions, so thanks for it.
I'm much into fair critique to help me to get better. But being called a beginner artist and that I don't have a grasp of smooth shading is offensive.
I have much experience with realism.
I try out to make a mixture between cartoonish expressions and halfway realistic painting for my cats, and there are unlimited possibilities to shade such a style. The mushy shadows are what I wanted to try out this time and I want to find out what people like and what looks good. That you don't like it, is good for me to know, but not a reason to call me a beginner.

I'm sorry that you took it it that way. I should have done my research and forgot to add that I did not mean you in particular, but that mushy shading more like tends to be a beginner mistake, because I've done it many times. Still am. Forgive me for coming out as rude. Tried to be constructive, but failed miserably.

Okay, I see, it's alright Don't worry. I know what you mean.
It still helped me as I found out that many people seem to like my sketchy lineart style, so I decided to practise both of my styles.
And I'm going to look if I can make my painterly cats' outlines more detailed. It's a point I didn't see before and I'll take a closer look at next time. And shading is a thing to always be trained, like your whole life long, so always something to work on
