Knuckles is a proud echidna and the guardian of the Master Emerald. What Knuckles lacks in grace or proper swimming technique, he more than makes up for in sheer raw strength and stamina. Knuckles is more inclined to sun-bake, train or strut on the beach than to actually enter the water for a swim, he rarely swims for leisure and doesn't see any inherent fun in it, he's unlikely to be found at a pool unless invited. If Knuckles is seen swimming he's likely building strength or exercising, while fond of competition, his focus tends to be on endurance than speed, the lack of technique in raw speed terms makes him a contender but not a guaranteed winner in a race. He pays little attention to water conditions from a safety-standpoint due his supreme self-confidence and he often seeks rough waters to test his might or to train his muscle, near-drownings in rapid rivers or rough waves are more common than he bothers to care or count, but he always finds a way through.

His style of swimming can best be described as visceral, while his presence on the land can be at times more meditative and focus on exercise means he's never seen in wearing shorts, only skintight swimwear like speedos or trunks. Due to his warrior-like protective nature and commitment to duty, Knuckles makes for the perfect lifeguard and is the boy who you want around if you're in need of assistance in the ocean.
Just don't count on him being at the beach in the first place.
