Yeah... I think it's probably just because the whole drawing style was a lot grittier back then, and that especially affected the JΓ€gers.

Probably because it was less colorful and had harder contrast. And is it just me or the "mad" part in "madboy" kind of disappeared? I mean the "this is all wrong" rage.
Just realized I'm actually doing mad science myself while answering this.
