After England defeated Ecuador in the World Cup today, memories of my visit to the "Banana Republic" came back to me. This is part 2 of another picture I have online.

As gas prices doubled in Ecuador in 1999, mass protest erupted in the country. People reacted by digging trenches in the road and creating barricades to stop production in the coastal city of Guayaquil. The atmosphere was chaotic and dangerous. This scene is etched in my memory.

The street sign really got my attention. Una Via translated means One Way.

South America has a huge problem with street kids. Can you imagine living on your own at his age?!

It's sad how there are people who can never stop complaining about America when there are so many more dangerous and poverty stricken countries in the world. Of course the US is in no way perfect, but compared to this and the genocides and religious persecution and oppression--and these on the most serious level--that go on in other countries, we have it pretty easy. Of course there still is poverty here, but we have soup kitchens and homeless shelters, school lunch programs and government assistance. It makes me so sad that these poor kids are living on the street!

oh yeah, i live in Venezuela and i had the opportunity to go to US, really nice there , but i have always found hilarious that some US citizens go against the police because a "2 mts tall guy died due to the officers use of taser, because the guy was on a meth rampage and was resisting arrest" i mean i dont know if i make my point but the fact is that there they do their job, here the police officers are the ones that mug people

The boy doesnt seem like he knows what is going on, or as if what happens in the back is just an everyday thing..

The kid looks like he is having fun, but sucks that he has to be alone at theat age. The fires are like barracades, ya?

The stark contrast really woke me up. I've been in Ecuador (for a visit though, never lived there for more than a couple months. Born on US soil) and I can remember being five and picking up a dollar bill off the floor, and a street kid was right behind me. His face was so sad, it killed me on the inside. I gave him the dollar, but I wish I could have given him more...

I'm so glad that you took the time to give a bit of background on this piece. All too often people post beautiful and moving photographs that leave the viewer wondering "What happened?" "Where is this?" and the questions are left unanswered. Beautiful piece.

That's my city... 1999 was the worst year for our country... millions of people were without money cause of the banks... the banks did some horrible things back then... But now the city is very joyful i invite you to come back everything is so changed...
