Epic! Not so sure about the pointy wings though...

Many thanks! Do you mean the wing tip? I'm aware of the trend and its points to make it rounded, but I've been reading that there is not really reasons to make it so circular (see Mark Witton's pterosaurs, for example). I'm since then making the tip only as curved as the last phalanx usually is.

Just saying it because it's more aerodynamic this way.
Pointy wings don't provide any thrust at all and the animal fails to take off, unless it can flap them really really fast. Less pointy wings might not make it the fast type, but, they provide more force so that it can take off easier, with less flapping and they can help it fly more steadily.
This is just a speculation based on modern day bird aerodynamics. However, both speculations are just as good. You might even be right! Who knows...?

Fair point, would be a reason for rounded tips, then. I'm only unsure if would be necessary to round the membrane shape too much, because the 4th phalanx alone would offer some curvature during flight when the wing is tensioned (while a resting wing would still look pointy).
These phalanx details I'm talking about comes from here: www.davehone.co.uk/wp-content/…

Interesting article.
And yes, i did not mean to round it too much, but, just as much as it takes to help it fly better. Because as you mentioned too, the tips themselves would curve and it would not fly steadily enough.

Amazing. Ludodactylus and Caulkicephalus have the best of both , large creast and huge,spike-like teeth.

Indeed, and lacks not only good, but any kind of toys! So far, the only Ludodactylus toy I ever saw was a Good Dinosaur one (hey CollectA, Safari, Papo and other companies, here is a hint!)

That's supposed to be a Ludodactylus? I thought it was another toothy Pteranodon, given that the movie seems to use stock creatures.

Vitor-Silva In reply to MugenSeiRyuu [2016-12-02 01:46:24 +0000 UTC]
Yes, there are 2 Ludos in the movie's "pterosaur gang" (the other one don't have a toy, apparently). It is nice that they used 3 pterosaurs with the crest + teeth combo (Ludodactylus, Guidraco and Caulkicephalus), perhaps as a reference of how the toothed Pteranodon have been constantly used in films. Too bad the Nyctosaurus still have teeth added, it breaked the "ironic reference".

Their wings are still too sharp and leathery, and their anatomy is off.
But yeah, it would resemble a weird Ludodactylus, about as much as a zombie resembles a living human.

The real JPIII Pteranodon. The ones seen in TLW and JW are toothless.

Toothed pterosaurs with Pteranodon-like crests are indeed very popular in several medias. Funnily, Ludodactylus itself haven't appeared in any documentary yet, as far as I know.

It might also look a bit like a cheap toy you own. It's actually named after that: Ludo is derived from latin ludus, which means "play", since it resembles many cheap toy Pterosaurs that combine a Pteranodon-like crest with teeth ( Pteranodon is toothless and even named after that fact )

It's more than just toys, a lot of depictions of Pteranodon back in the Hanna-Barbera cartoons and cartoons today show it with teeth. So every time you see a toothed-pterodactyl on TV know that it is not Pteranodon...it is Ludodactlyus!

I know. Although those often also come with long tails and batwings.

Asuma17 In reply to MugenSeiRyuu [2017-05-04 15:18:08 +0000 UTC]
The signature batwings are very outdated, most media's today hardly show that depiction anymore.
And if its a Pterodactyl with teeth and a long tail, then it's either the Rhamphorhynchids, Scaphognathus or Harpactognathus.

Well, I don't own any dinosaur, or other prehistoric animal, toys. But, I do own the particular video that I mentioned. I want to say the video is "Dinotasia" but I could be wrong.

MugenSeiRyuu In reply to MviluUatusun [2016-12-02 00:08:11 +0000 UTC]
Dinotasia does not feature Ludodactylus. Maybe you are thinking about the toothy, but crestless Anhanguera, if it was about a mother throwing out her kids in order to teach them how to fly.

Oops. You're right. The pterodactyl in "Dinotasia" was crestless. However, other than the crest, it did look extremely similar to this one.

MugenSeiRyuu In reply to MviluUatusun [2016-12-02 12:23:35 +0000 UTC]
The proper term is Pterosaur. Anhanguera looking similar to Ludodactylus makes sense since both are rather closely related.
