when Alex became a Red master his right arm was overwhelmed with the power of the red cosmic energy, transforming his arm into a crystal like substance, so he had no choice but to cut his own arm off to stop the transformation from consuming him completely, the only thing left of his arm is the crystal that hangs on the handle of his sword.
