Description A cloud of dust billowed up and the Nidoking slid backwards under the sheer force of the Spike Cannon, leaving scratch marks on the ground. He had braced for impact as quick as he could, but it was a fierce attack of desperation. The Cloyster had put everything she could into this final attack and her energy was drained. The Cloyster wobbled upright and the Nidoking stood obscured in the dust. Both trainers looked on with wide eyes hoping their pokémon would be the one to stay standing.

“Come on Gogo! You can do this!” Alix shouted; the fear of her Nidoking fainting slowly catching up to her.

“You… you can do this Lenala… I know you can!” Lexi started out in a soft voice, progressively getting louder.

She was timid and not fond of competition, but she knew she had to win this battle; it was for a friend, part of her team. Her first battle since she got here, and already the stakes were high. She fought back tears and tried to look as determined as possible. Watching her Cloyster try and stay upright she couldn’t keep her mind off what started this whole thing.

-------------------

It was earlier that morning Lexi was running around the stadium looking for a lost pokéball. She was a 16 year old girl with brown hair just above her shoulders, dressed for the cold in shades of blue and light purple. Even though the temperature was far from chilly, she wore a cap over her short brown hair and soft jacket covered most of her turtle-neck sweater. She also wore a knee high skirt with leggings to keep her warm and large white boots. These boots were not the best to run with, but she was in a hurry. Her Smoochum was lost and all alone in her pokéball.
"Momi, where are you..?" she thought, with a worried look on her face as she retraced her steps.
Lexi was running through a part of the arena she had been to not long ago watching some opening ceremonies when she spotted something on a bench in the distance. This part of the stadium was now mostly empty, save for a sparse few people walking through it as a short cut to other places, the gleaming round object was easy to spot. As Lexi got closer she recognized the familiar shape and colors.

"That’s Momi’s pokéball!" she thought happily.

Just as she began to run towards the pokéball with new vigor, a young trainer walked up to the same bench.
It was a young female pokémon trainer the same age as Lexi, only a bit shorter and dressed strangely. She had hair the same length as Lexi’s but it was blonde with colorful streaks in it. She wore a strapless pink dress and its skirt barely covered her thighs. A translucent ribbon adorned her right wrist and a fingerless glove covered her right hand. A pouch was strapped around her right thigh and her legs were covered in leg warmers from her knees down to her shoes.
The odd appearance of the girl startled Lexi for a moment, but she regained her composure and began towards her pokéball. Suddenly the pink dressed trainer looked down at the bench and shrugged before picking up the ball and throwing it in her pouch. Lexi’s mouth gaped open in shock and she stood still as the girl who just took Momi continued on her way.
Lexi burst into a run and stopped in front of the trainer, out of breath.

“H… hi… I… you… that pokéball you took from that bench belongs to me,” Lexi spoke barely audible.

“I didn’t take any pokéball off any bench, at least I sure don’t remember taking any pokéball off any bench,” the trainer responded with a smile, obviously clueless as to what was going on.

“Yes you did… it was only a few moments ago… how could you have forgotten already? You put it in your pouch, maybe I could look through it?”

“Oh my pouch has important things in it; I need them for my research, I cannot have random people looking through it! I’m sorry you lost your pokémon though, maybe I can help you find it!”

“I don’t need to find it… you have it already…”

“I’m pretty sure I don’t, that’d be silly if I was just walking around taking people’s pokémon.”

“But… but I saw you… and I… and Momi…” Lexi was beginning to get overwhelmed. This trainer seemed nice, but a little crazy at best, and a lunatic at worse. She had no idea what to do and felt like she wanted to cry. Her eyes began to well up when the other trainer noticed and spoke.

“Oh dear, please don’t cry, I’ll tell you what, how about we battle?” the trainer sounded excited, “A battle could always help me gain more knowledge and research. If I win I’ll walk around with you to look for your lost pokémon, but if you win I’ll let you search my bag for anything you want, though I assure you your pokéball won’t be in there.”

“Oh… um… okay I guess…” Lexi was worried for Momi but didn’t see any other obvious way to end the situation quicker. She would simply have to win.

The two trainers walked down the steps to the empty arena and stood across from one another, ready for their first pokémon battle in the stadium. It was still mostly empty but a few people noticed something was going on and began to watch from the sidelines.

“My name is Alix, by the way, a one on one, three pokémon battle sound good to you?”

“Yes, that’s fine,” Lexi replied.

Only having to fight three pokémon would end much quicker than six. She reached into her pocket and threw out a pokéball. It opened up with a swish and an orange, happy looking bird appeared. It was holding a white bag at first glance, but a second glance would reveal the bag was actually the bird’s tail.

“Please help me Quig; Momi needs us to win this battle!” Lexi shouted with uncharacteristic determination. The bird pokémon nodded in understanding and turned towards Alix.

“A Delibird, eh? Well I start out with a Pachirisu, then. Go Nola!” Alix threw out her own pokéball and a small blue and white squirrel looking creature with yellow cheeks appeared. “Let’s end this quick, use Discharge!”

The Pachirisu’s cheeks crackled with electricity as it build up its energy. Alix grinned, knowing the electric move would do an immense amount of damage to the bird pokémon. Lexi knew this too, but also knew Quig had enough tricks up his sleeves to deal with it.

“Quig, use Double Team to avoid it, please,” Lexi sounded almost like she was asking more than telling but Quig nodded in confirmation. Pachirisu let the electricity loose in a massive discharge, but several copies of the Delibird appeared around Quig. The discharge harmlessly shot through several copies, causing them to disappear in a flash. As the rest of the copies faded away Quig stood unscathed.

“We can’t let him try that again, keep him still with Grass Knot, Nola,” Alix commanded. Before Lexi could even think vine-like grass was caught up around Quig’s ankles, effectively grounding and staying the pokémon. Lexi was worried for her Delibird, but tried to not let it distract her.

“I think… I think you can end this with a powerful gift!” Lexi looked at Quig questioningly and the Delibird nodded and began searching through his bag.
“Nola, run at him and hit him with a powerful Iron Tail, he can’t stop you,” Alix looked on confidently; she couldn’t imagine some sort of gift finishing the fight. Pachirisu ran towards Quig with abnormal speed and her tail glowed white with energy as it became a massive bludgeoning weapon. Nola jumped into the air ready to come down with a hard attack.

“Now! Use Present!” Lexi shouted, her voice squeaking a bit under the strain.

Quig looked happy as he grabbed a colorful box out of his tail-bag. The Christmas gift looking box grew to almost double its size as the Delibird chucked it at the Pachirisu. The box exploded into smoke under the sheer force and Nola was sent flying into a nearby wall, where she fell to the ground, dazed and moaning a bit.

“I guess you’re out Nola, but that’s okay, you did a wonderful job, I am sorry I underestimated her pokémon. Now it’s time for a harder hitter, go Artemis!” The Pachirisu glowed and returned to her pokéball in a beam of light before Alix threw the next one. A small red fox with multiple tails appeared from the second pokéball. The fire type Vulpix was more than ready for a battle, Quig however, was not. The pokémon was sitting on the ground playing with some pebbles seemingly bored.

“Q-Quig! You need to pay attention to the…” Lexi could not even finish before Alix began her attack.
“Use flamethrower Artemis!” Alix chimed in. The Vulpix growled, albeit a tad high pitched and let loose a massive stream of flames from its mouth engulfing the bird pokémon. Quig ran around for a few seconds wailing its wings before falling over twitching as smoke billowed off him.

“I’m sorry Quig, you did well though. I guess I need Patton’s help now,” Lexi withdrew the scorched Quig from the battle and sent out her next pokémon. A mound of brown fur appeared with a little pink nose and two white tusks.
“Patton, Momi needs us, we need to fight,” Lexi pleaded with Patton who responded with a grunt of acknowledgement. The old Piloswine was ready to fight for his the younger pokémon who he considered his children.

“Well dig is certainly out of the question, we can’t risk it with that ground type, this is going to be tough, but we might be able to pull it off Artemis, use Dark Pulse!” black and purple wisps emitted from the Vulpix in response to Alix’s order as she began her move.

“Hit her with an Earthquake Patton!” Lexi followed up with her own command. The Piloswine shook violently and the ground began to vibrate. Vulpix let out a pulse off darkness, but the ground trembled intensely cracking under the pressure and it threw Artemis’s aim off. The attack hit Patton, but it didn’t hit hard or direct.

“Quickly, use Roar!” The Piloswine shook off the attack and grunted to Lexi. He took a deep breath and let out a deafening roar. The Vulpix closed its eyes and flinched unable to respond, then turned as if ready to run from the battle. Lexi knew she had to use this chance to her advantage and finish it.

“Use Ice Fang, Patton”

“No! Artemis, get a hold of yourself!” Alix yelled but couldn’t get her Vulpix out of trouble. Patton charged at Artemis and his tusks glowed blue as they became chilled with ice energy. The Vulpix tumbled back a few feet before crumpling to the ground. Artemis whined a bit trying to get up, but could not support herself, she was down and out.

“Okay, this is it, your turn Gogo!” As her last pokémon returned to her ball, she threw out her final fighter. A large grey creature looking like a cross between a rhino on its hind legs and a dinosaur appeared shaking the ground as it did. Nidokings are not small pokémon and Gogo was certainly not an exception. Patton grunted; the old pokémon was already tired, but too stubborn to let off his opponent easy.

“Use Ice Fang Patton,” Lexi was nervous but she hoped her pokémon was still strong enough to fight the Nidoking.

“Don’t let him get close, use surf!” Alix yelled out and quite suddenly a massive wave of water appeared behind Gogo. The water moved over him and crashed on top of the Piloswine before he could get an Ice Fang ready.

Patton writhed under the pressure but stayed upright, still too stubborn to give up.
“Try… a… an Earthquake,” Lexi was not sure what to do, but Patton continued to listen to her. The ground trembled as it did earlier in the match, but with significantly less force this time. Gogo rocked back and forth stumbling around, but remained mostly unscathed. King looked a tad annoyed and got ready to attack.

“Finish him off with a Poison Jab,” Alix ordered in a manner of fact voice. The Nidoking charged up to the Piloswine, his fist glowing purple with poisonous power.

“Brace for impact then hit him with an Icy Wind, Patton, please,” Lexi crossed her fingers and hoped for the best. Alix looked quizzically at the other trainer, wondering how in the world the old weathered pokémon could stand to survive another attack, let alone send out his own.

The Poison Jab smash into the Piloswine, and sure enough, he stood still. Gogo reeled back in amazement and disbelief while Patton let loose and Icy Wind. The frigid blast of air shocked Gogo and he winced in pain. He was not hit too hard however and quickly recovered.

“Um, okay, NOW finish him off with a Poison Jab,” Alix said, still a bit surprised. The Nidoking responded in kind with a quick jab, sending the Piloswine falling over in both pain and exhaustion. Old Patton was finally done with the battle and desperately needed rest.

“You were spectacular Patton, thank you for your help. You’re my last hope Lenala,” Lexi retrieved Patton and threw the pokéball of her final pokémon, her last chance.

“Lenala, Quig and Patton are… down… and it’s up to you to finish this, you need to beat that Nidoking to help Momi,” Lexi looked to Lenala and the large spiked oyster pokémon glared at her opponent with its black face from within its shell.

The Cloyster was angry and more than ready to fight.

“Okay, start off with a Poison Jab, Gogo,” Alix was not worried yet, her Nidoking was perhaps more tired than she would have hoped from finishing off the Piloswine, but she still believed she could win the battle.

“Withdraw please!” Lexi responded quickly, as if out of habit. The Cloyster closed and Gogo’s fist clanged against a hard shell, not even leaving a mark. Keeping herself closed under the pressure, however, did cost her some stamina.

“Now, Ice Beam!” Lexi yelled, her voice squeaking again.

The Nidoking rubbed his fist which now hurt from punching the solid shell and his mouth dropped open in surprised when Lenala opened up and fired off an Ice Beam from point blank range. The blast of the frigid beam impacted Gogo with such force he flew backwards several feet and landed on his back. As the Nidoking got up and regained his footing, Lenala paused to catch her breath.

“Now it’s finally OUR turn for an Earthquake, come on Gogo!” The Nidoking nodded to his trainer’s command and raised one foot high into the air before slamming it back down into the ground. The ground shook and split with the force sending a fissure towards the Cloyster. Rocks and boulders rumbled around Lenala crashing into her and sent her cascading backwards, heavily hurt.

“Quick, get her with a Poison Jab while you have a chance and finish this,” Alix yelled out at the top of her voice.

“Hurry, get up Lenala!” Lexi worriedly pleaded with her pokémon. Lenala struggle to upright herself and just barely managed to get stable as the Nidoking approached her and swung his fist.

“SPIKE CANNON!” Lexi screamed as loud as she could with tears in her eyes and Lenala got the command just in time. She let loose Spike Cannon a millisecond before Gogo’s attack could hit her

Lexi shook her head and brought her attention back to what was happening now. Gogo’s silhouette was barely visible in the dust and Lenala continued to wobble. Lexi closed her eyes tight not able to stand to watch. Suddenly she heard a loud thump and a gasp from both Alix and the trainers who had gathered to watch. Lexi slowly opened her eyes and looked at the scene in from of her. Gogo lay flat on his back moaning, his eyes swirling around as if watching birds circle his head. Lenala stood firm with a smile on her face, content at her victory.

Lexi burst into tears of joy and ran over to Lenala, she gave the Cloyster the best hug she could possibly give a pokémon with a spiked shell and repeatedly thanked Lenala before returning her to her pokéball.

“May… May I see your bag now?” She asked Alix.

“Oh I supposed so, a deal is a deal,” Alix withdrew Gogo into his pokéball and unclasped her back to give to the winner of the battle. Lexi quickly searched through it and found Momi’s pokéball before returning it to Alix.

“Well that’s quite funny; I honestly don’t remember how that got in there. I’m sure glad you won that battle, I don’t know what I’d do if I found some random trainer’s pokéball in my bag, hehe, I’m very sorry about all this, I hope I didn’t upset you,” Alix responded to Lexi who looked at her with a raised eyebrow.

“You’re… strange…”

“Yeah, I get that a lot…”

Great story; and the battle is well-played out. I've never done anything like this before, but I'm hoping to try it and see how I do.
