unless you are going for a grainy effect, it looks to edited, like a newsprint photo
try taking it into lab color, and messing only with the light channel. it usually reduces the noise in a photo.
or if you have CS3, in adjustments, click on "black and white" and then it lets you mess with each channel of color, and you can see the results in realtime, deciding if you like the effect or not.

This is wonderful, nice flowing curve breaks the image with symmetry along with the high and low key to each side. The only thing I feel that it might need to make it even better is perhaps a little blending with solftlight to make the contrast come up a little to make the shadows have a bit more power yet keep their detail. Great job.
