oh your welcome! this is just so goreous. i adore it! you should make more like this one here.
my little kodak digital flairs if you point it at the sun just right. i like the effect if its what i'm looking for, but sometimes it can be annoying.

thanks,
Enhancements in photoshop are not my preference. But this one seemed to just need to go in that direction.

In my eyes those photoshop filters that simulate glare are very annoying, but I guess most people like it..
nice colors again.

Thanks Alexander for your comment.
In the old days...when i started taking pictures glare was a real issue, coated optics were expensive and hard to come by. Today, lenses have improved so much that even the poorest made leneses are better than the ones I used to use.
The effect fairly faithfully reporduces how it would have looked using an uncoated lens, so from that perspctive, i think PS has technically done a good job of emulation. However, having said that, flair is and was a nasty problem. It is not something that is usually valued and certainly I do not. But this shot did lend itself to this kind of a manipulation, so i don't appologize for doing it. That does not mean to say that I am gung ho and moving in this direction professionally or experimentally.
Thanks again for your prespective.
I hope you have a really good weekend.

Glare of this nature is virtually impossible to get with modern lenses without image degradation, so really the only option of PS. If you really want it, try to et an old uncoated lens. (You will have to work out how to attach it to your camera of course and exposures will be manual)
Photography is an exercise in compromise. That is where the challenge lies. If you move too far in any direction, with any setting, lens, light set up, ASA, or ISO, any variable really, you loose something else. This is why cameras can not take pictures, only photographers can. In the class i teach, i try to emphasize this fact. Knowing it well, helps to increase the creative capacity of the photographer.
ps...I did not read any critique in your message. Just a personal statement. I too do not critique people work unless asked. It is not m y place to judge the artistic merits of someone elseโs journey.

you are absolutely right about the thing between photographer and camera.
But actually - even today - I often managed to have a little glare on my photos. When you don't look directly into the sun but nearly, you get it. The one of today had like 8 edges and was just a bit there. I can upload it into my scraps if you want to, or did I misunderstand you?

lol....absolutely no offence taken.
No it is not a boat. ( live on the prairies....not a boat in sight for miles and miles). But it is th etop of a grain elevator....but I agree, having grown up on the shipping lanes....it does indeed look like a boat.

I have dreamed of living on an island. But I have been land lockled my whole life. My brother is a ships engineer. he has travelled all over the world. I have visited a few islands, an dI have loved each time and each place. maybe someday it will be possible.
have a great weekend.

where did you take it?

WayneBenedet In reply to Mugen02 [2007-05-10 22:31:42 +0000 UTC]
the picture was taken early in the morning, on the prairies of canada. There was a low lying fog and clouds. The top of the elevator broke through the fog just as the sun came up behind it. I was hoping that this would happen, and I was ready, in about the right spot...(I had to move about 50 feet). It was taken 1.5 miles away from the elevator with a 300mm lens.
