Description
Two High speed Intercepters in close formation.
Left Craft:
Terran Alliance F 593 Tigercat:
High speed air superiority fighter optimized for endo/exo atmospheric operations. able to accelerate at over 12 Gees for extended periods of time it can reach high supersonic or low Hypersonic speeds depending on its weapons load.
Its standard weapons array is an internal fast firing pulse laser cannon or a compact plasma rapid fire plasma cannon. It can mount wing loaded anti-ship torpedoes or anti-ship/anti-fighter dogfight missiles in a streamlined centerline canister. It can carry out strike missions using air to surface, or orbit to surface standoff tactical munitions. However, it is not deployed in such roles unless other craft are unavailable.
The primary role of the craft is point defense intercept, and escort of antiship strike fighters. It often loiters near feul sources, orbital installations, or in low orbit, then accelerates to intercept suspect vessels, or respond to hostile force entering the system. If surface based it can exceed hypersonic speeds in a vertical climb and reach orbit in minutes, it can reach nearby satellites within half an hour or reach the typical jump limit of starships shortly afterward.
Any vessel attempting to flee the area is highly unlikely to avoid intercept and a flight of missile armed Tigercats is lethal to anything not well armored or protected by heavy point defense weapons.
The fighter carries an advanced ECM/EW system, although not as sophisticated as the Tigershark which it usually escorts. Between its high agility, acceleration, and ECM/EW systems the Tigercat is a difficult target to hit. In a dogfight. the craft is fully capable of rotating 180 x180 degrees away from its line of travel in an atmosphere, and 360x360 degrees in open space. Few conventional atmospheric fighters can survive combat with the Tigercat without significant numerical superiority.
Like most fighters being introduced the pilot rides in a completely sealed capsule using optics, pulse doppler radar, line scanning imagining radar, and Laser detection and ranging systems. It also has a fully holographic interface within the cockpit, with the pilot having an unobstructed view in his HUD at any angle through numerous cameras and other sensors.
The craft on the right is the
TAE P-590 Tigershark Pursuit Interceptor
it is has a superior sensor and electronic warfare system to the system mounted in the Tigercat, but as slightly lower agility and acceleration. as more F-593s enter service it is scheduled to be transferred to anti-ship strike/point defense roles with upgrades to its fire control system to better accommodate anti-ship missiles, and anti-ship torpedos.
Both fighters are manufactured by a Joint venture, TAE/VALKIIR/TAU conglomerate headed by Norcal-K'mahda, they are both expensive and complex fighters suited for ground deployment rather than fleet roles. They are not a common sight in frontier regions and are not used by many forces outside of large well-funded militaries, and allies supplied with eh craft by one of te Major powers.
