Description In Lunar there is this dude called the Dragonmaster (Dyne is the old one, your main protagonist, Alex, quests to become the new one through the games) who protects the Goddess and does her work around Lunar. Dyne and Ghaleon used to be legendary best friends until a mysterious catastrophe parted them and Dyne (supposedly) died. In The Silver Star, the Goddess sends them off to stop the black dragon from rampaging across Lunar, Dyne is 'killed' and Ghaleon goes batshit bonkers and vows revenge on the Goddess. In Silver Star Story and Silver Star Harmony the Goddess asks Dyne to use his powers to change her into a human baby, because she feels the people have become too reliant on her. Dyne agrees but Ghaleon insists people need a God/Goddess and he spends the next fifteen years planning to become the next God of Lunar. They have this wild argument where Ghaleon is shouting at him from the steps of the Goddess tower and Dyne is saying some stuff about how the Goddess will exist in the eyes of lovers and Ghaleon calls it 'deadly romantic rhetoric' ha ha.

In each version Dyne is supposed to be dead but is actually hanging around as a beardo called Laike who pops up now and again to help you and give you weird old man advice. Only in the book version is Ghaleon aware that Dyne is still alive. Some of my drawings are of them reconciled and older. It never happens in the games but this is my alternative universe

Dyne's kind of outrageous and goofy and Ghaleon's logical and reserved. Somehow they managed to tolerate each other for the 15+ years of travelling together and seeing each other every day.

Also I keep drawing Ghaleon's ears bigger and bigger! IIIII like. big. ears and I cannot lie. You other brothers can't deny....

"Hope!"
"I see only despair."
Dyne robbed humanity of something to look up to and aspire to. (Not that Ghaleon was any better thinking in his pride that HE could possibly replace divinity with HIMSELF for humanity.)

I always did wonder at Dyne and Ghaleon's dynamics. In the game, Dyne was sort of pegged as being reserved and respectful (proper hero business and whatnot, almost like an older version of Alex!), but as Laike he was totally playful and more than a little bit of a troll. I think that's why I didn't catch on to Dyne being Laike earlier...the image we were given of Dyne through the stories was conflicting to the way he actually was. It would have been fun to get a chance to see more of Ghaleon and Dyne interacting. They have such different personalities, I bet it'd be fun to bounce them off each other.

I think Lunar suffers a lot from terrible writing. It's more fleshed out than a lot of games, but, let's face it, it isn't really high literature. A lot of the characters have weird yo-yo personalities. Their motives aren't very clear.

In the PSP version there's a prologue with the four heroes and Dyne is a total dork. The archetypal goofball-hero that can turn serious when he needs to.

You're right, Laike is an absolute troll!

The writing wasn't top notch, true, but it wasn't bad for a 90s JRPG. I'm usually pretty forgiving of plot holes if a game can deliver on the humor, have good character design and have good dialogue, and both Lunar and Lunar 2 really delivered with that. Story writing aside, the combat system in Lunar was really innovative for an RPG too: it was nice to see something different from the standard Final Fantasy line em up and take shots at each other.

No no, not bad at all. I think the highlights outweigh the pitfalls. And anyway, I like it just the way it is--hopelessly goofy. It wouldn't be the same game if it were really serious.

Homo subtext, me gusta. It feels like I should have played this at some point. Maybe I'll try to find it now. Yus.

Also, your sketches are beautiful. I want them all.

Yeah, maybe a little bit. Undoubtedly they shared some kind of deep love, whatever sort that may have been. I like to think of it as an indefinable mix. Probably the most compelling version is The Silver Star. Vowing revenge against a Goddess and becoming deeply embittered forever is a pretty intense reaction.

It's like some weird Kirk/Spock relationship. Loud and crazy vs sensible and sedate. I much prefer your alternative universe (despite not even having played the game).

Yeah it kind of is, though Dyne is less cock-sure and more silly.
