Chasing. Something, anything. We should always be doing it so as not to sit still.This is Grand Haven, Michigan, a place I haven't been to in many years. It's the same place where I took the photo that became The Dying of the Light ( [link] )
I wanted to go back and try and capture the beauty of this place again. No, it wasn't the same. Nothing ever is. The day was cold, the wind was like a whip coming off the lake. The beach was empty and lonely. The sun was setting in a different part of the sky. The feeling was different. But still beautiful.
When the sun hit this position in the sky, I was literally running down the boardwalk to try and get to a good place for the shot. Then I found myself balanced on the wall, precariously leaning over as far as I could for the angle. Yes, another instance of me looking like a freak to the innocent bystanders.
Oh well. I'm still chasing. Something.

Wow, that is a stunning shot! The title fits so well - I know the feeling. The lines of the boardwalk lead you further into the picture, towards the sunset. The sky is just stunning, I love how bright it seems in the center and the palette of colors spreading across the sky. You can almost feel the chill air, deserted by everyone, as you walk faster and faster. The sun moves so quickly once it gets down that far - the moments fly by and soon you're left standing there, you mind full of the setting sun, standing alone in the dark as the wind sends shivers over you. Did you catch what you were chasing? Who knows. Amazing shot- you caught that much.

from what i see of the possibilites of composition you managed perfectly; the eye find gaze and harmony with te picture. And those cloud formations just add it up to a unique picture.

Amazing sky.
But how come there are no people? Usually the pier is swarming with tourists come summertime. The trees still have their leaves in this picture though, so it's not winter...

It was actually autumn, and it was very, very cold. The wind coming in off the lake was bone-chilling.

Very nice photo. The sky looks phenomenal. Actually, I would have thought it was somewhere more tropical if you hadn't said the location in your description. Looking again, though, I could see how it'd be very cold there. Excellent composition, and a great capture of a very "big" sky.
