Description You’ve heard of child prodigies – Mozart, Picasso, Pascal, Marie Curie.

They were blessed with talents at such a young age and given the opportunity to flourish. Of course, the education systems today in many countries takes that as an example, allowing more advanced youth to fast-track.

Success stories are aplenty. Interviews on them showcase their desire to challenge themselves in pursuit of knowledge. Sure, some struggles are mentioned but the picture that you see is still a bed of roses with maybe only a thorn or two in its midst.

But do you actually know what they faced? Do you see beyond the roses, its blood red dye hiding the cracks and fissures underneath? Do you see the real answers behind the perfected interview print?

You don’t.

You say, “Wow, she must be so proud! It must feel great being able to challenge herself.”

It was refreshing to be able to tackle more difficult material.
But did you know how I lived?
The expectations, the pressure, the competition.
When was the last time I took a break… I don’t remember.
How many times did I turn down my friends’ invitation until they stopped calling me out?

You say, “I’m sure she’s good at this but she’s ignorant about everything else.”

I have a diverse group of friends who increase my knowledge.
But how many of them were true friends?
How many of them secretly hated me, used me, or laughed at me?
The last time I did not eat alone… it’s too long ago.
When I wanted a listening ear and scrolled through my contacts… my pillow was my only comfort.

You say, “She’s just a young arrogant girl. She had help to get where she is.”

I worked with many people and we bounced ideas off each other.
But did they really help me?
Sabotaged, ostracized, backstabbed – that’s what I remember.
Working alone would have been best if I had the choice.
Yet why do I feel this pain when I see other groups working happily together?

But there are things you do see that are real.

You see a successful person.

Because I learnt how to deal with stress.
I know how to push myself to the limits and not break down ever again.

You see a cheerful, friendly person.

Because I learnt how to pick the right friends.
I know how to discard the bad ones and keep the good ones.

You see a team leader.

Because I learnt how to manage people.
I know how to manipulate them by hook or by crook.

Because in the end, both you and I can say that there is only one trait that is inherent in such a person.

Resilience.

This is interesting, for more reasons than one. Still, I'd like to see concrete examples of behavior (others and yours) that lead to these feelings.
Of course, I don't want you to do anything you don't want to--this just piqued my interest and curiosity. I know a couple of other folks who had similar problems, and find that I understand better with "action scenes," so to speak.  I like the changes between regular font and italicized.

Ah I get what you mean. It would certainly have more impact if I expanded this into an actual story. At the time, I didn't want to get into a lot of specifics, focusing instead on the experience as a whole. But maybe next time, I'll come back and give this a more fleshed out version.
And thank you for the fav as well! If you're interested, do check out my other works (poetry, prose, stories) too!

I seriously felt like you were talking. I was not reading but hearing you~
I've never experienced such a situation and it doesn't sound cool... I mean, to me, it sounds already hard and tiring before you tell it orz I don't wanna be on the top. I just wanna be me and do things I enjoy. That's maybe why I failed at university... I don't know.
I'm sorry you had to bear such a thing in your childhood/teenage days >< but yes, it's your life, your past, and you would not be the aame if you haven't pass through this (:
It's a very beautiful text anyway!
Did you win the contest? C:

Nope it's definitely not cool. T.T But I'm still grateful for the experience~

Thank you so much Cece~ Nah unfortunately I didn't win. There were tons of wonderful entries, so it was expected that I wouldn't get anything. But it would have been cool to even win the last prize because there was a lot of stuff! XD

Reading this reminds me why I quit the gifted program when I was younger. I didn't want to compete with the cream of the  crop, nor did I want to be the best of the best; I just wanted to be me, and devote my energy to things I enjoyed doing. I'm so sorry to hear you had to deal with all of this pressure; human beings shouldn't have to endure this. You shouldn't have so much at stake, and have to sacrifice so much. But I am glad you're able to have a happy life here on DA.

WindMeister8 In reply to StrangelyShiny [2017-01-04 05:19:26 +0000 UTC]

Ahh I'm glad that you made the right decision for yourself! It's definitely not an easy one.
I pity myself sometimes, but then when I think about it, there are so many people who have harder lives than me. So I shouldn't complain too much.
And yes, dA has definitely made my life happier with so many nice people like you!

Both of us can say that. Many have suffered more, and we still have many blessings in life.
And I feel the same way!

There's always something you lose when you're given something else in these sorts of situations. The social aspects of being a young teen in a young adult world must have been very difficult to live with, and you wrote it down well. I'm glad you came out better on the other side. Resilience is one of the best qualities to have.

And thank you~ I'm grateful for the experience despite all that I lost.

(p.s. whoops! I realized I forgot to watch you! Your works are really touching. )

All the struggle and perseverance got me to where I am now, so I can definitely relate to this!

I definitely put everything I had into every endeavour, and I can personally say that the satisfaction of a good job outweighs the pain endured!!

Anything can happen if you try!

Amazing work!!

WindMeister8 In reply to Rethar-Stonehammer [2016-12-01 03:06:02 +0000 UTC]

I'm happy that this resonates with you!

I agree it does outweigh some of the pain. But a part of me regrets the fact that I lost part of my youth, which I can never get back again.

But I'll definitely look ahead and pave my own way!

Thank you for reading and the encouragement!! And if you're interested, do check out my other works (poetry, prose, stories) if you're interested!

You're very welcome!

A great song to help in hard times is "Corner of the Sky", by Matthew James Thomas.

I love it, and it's certainly helped me through difficult times.
