Description Symbiosis is a photo taken for the "REJECTED Beauty" Contest. Hosted by What an inspiring idea.

This is lichen which seems ugly to the uninformed human eye. Lichens are considered symbionts because they are the product of an alga and a fungus. This results in a new and different organism with characteristics of them both.

In nature these balanced relationships exist completing the cycle of life and benefiting all the natural world in many ways.

While most reject this as beauty I find it very beautiful in that two organisms work together to benefit each other and all others who surround them. If only human relationships were so symbiotic.

***This beauty received its final rejection when it was run over repeatedly by a large riding mower, tossed aside, shred to pieces and completely destroyed. Obviously the lawn care guy failed to see its intrinsic beauty. I am happy to have caught this shot as it no longer exists.***

I give permission to use this piece in any way for her contest only.

Very beautiful! I really like it a lot!

Let me go a little geek here.... Biologically, Lichens are considered symbionts because they are the product of an alga and a fungus. The result is a new and different organism with characteristics of hem both.

Do you mind if I use your "geek" to update my comments on my photo?

What do you know a woman more of a geek than me. I like that quality in a person.

I had really forgotten all about lichens truth be told. I surprised myself that I even knew what it was on that old white bark. Thanks so much for the reminder on why my photo is symbiosis.
