Description Finally finished my version of the Joker. Man the Joker is an awesome villian.

I stretched my Photoshop abilities a little thin on this one. So many layers. It boggles the mind. I also worked in a bit of vectoring on this one too for parts of the background. Flash has me on a short leash.

Anyway, hope you all enjoy this. I think I've been getting progressively better at this Photoshopping, so now I'm sort of ashamed of my original Two Face drawing, and may have to redo it. But I'll save that project for another day.

Edit: I changed the background cause I thought it was just a little too plain.

The way I've been doing these Batman villian drawings is by first drawing and shading them on paper, then I scanned the drawing into Photoshop and messed with the line quality a bit. Then I colored it in lower levels below the original pencil drawing.

I'd say that Joker is in the running for the best villain in ANY comic series... ever.

Indeed, he's such an expertly written villain and such an absolute antithesis to Batman.

Yeah. That's the best part of him, that they have written him as such a contrast to Batman. The original concept of the villain is honestly kind of lame, but he's become SO much more than that.

Indeed, truly a masterly written villain. He has his hilarious antics but then suddenly he says something not so funny but downright threatening. I think Mark Hamil's voice acting really portrays this in The Joker.

Well I thank you for the barrage of WOWs. Yeah, I think that the background was pretty essential, especially when I compare it to the "old version".

I've honestly been waiting for this one and I love how you captured The Joker's hilarious aspect of insanity. He's crazy, he kills people, and whether or not he realizes what he is doing it's still funny to him...AWESOME.
Great Work

I'm really liking the detail in this pic WD-Are these more traditional lines rather than vectorized? It works really well anyway. Love how you've drawn his teeth too-it's as if the viewer is going to get lost in it. His eyes have that vacant, evil sort of look in them too-Love the hair & little mean curl dangling down
The simple b/g with the moon behind the cell window is effective too.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WonderDookie In reply to ErinHunting [2006-02-20 03:37:07 +0000 UTC]

Thank you much for the nice comment. No, only a little bit of this drawing was actually vectorized, and that was only a bit of the background. Most of it is my original pencil drawing, and coloring in photoshop.
I've actually changed the simple background a bit though. I think it was just a little TOO simple, so I messed with it a tad. Hope it's still effective.

Yeah. That background really bothered me too, but of course I didn't realize how much it bothered me until after I had posted it, and then I went out of town for the weekend and didn't have time to fix it... until now.
BAM! New background. Hope it looks better.

You know, there's something about this... and I've been staring at the pic for the past five minutes trying to decipher what it is... but there's something about this that captures the fact that Joker is more sociopath than psychopath. A truly crazy person wouldn't mind so much being locked up at Arkham because he really wouldn't know the difference in realities, but J-man here wants to get out ASAP because he's not so much crazy as he enjoys acting like it.

And maybe that's what I'm seeing in this pic... the "camera" is on him, so he ramps up the maniacal grin and widens the eyes; cranes his neck and tenses the muscles on his face... as long as you think he's crazy, so much the better... but the second you look away, he's gonna start tugging at the restraints of that straight jacket...

It's that left eye... he's watching me to see if I'm buyin' into the act.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WonderDookie In reply to G-Go [2006-02-20 03:32:42 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. Definately. I've always liked a much more sociopathic version of Joker as well. Like the way that Joker's crime is inspired entirely by his encounters with Batman. One of my favorite Joker moments ever was in Dark Knight Returns when it's many years in the future and since Batman has gone into retirement Joker has gone into a catatonic state without smiling. Then when Joker hears news about Batman being sighted again his smile starts up again. Freakin' brilliant.
Oy, and just so you know, your comment about the "camera" being on him inspired my new version of the background. That should really support your interpretation of him.

G-Go In reply to WonderDookie [2006-02-20 21:11:11 +0000 UTC]

Excellent! That shadow on the wall really adds that whole "posing" feel. I dig it.

And yes, that moment in Dark Knight Returns is fantastic... Joker's just a chain smoking inmate with a goofy face until he sees the news report, and then he has this transformative moment... just fantastic.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WonderDookie In reply to G-Go [2006-05-16 07:43:54 +0000 UTC]

Dude, your comment about Joker being a sociopath is totally changing the way that I view him now. I just finished reading "The Killing Joke" and you're totally right. If he was actually psychopathic he wouldn't know that he's crazy.
By the way, if you haven't read that comic yet, you should, it's truly awesome.

G-Go In reply to WonderDookie [2006-05-20 05:54:04 +0000 UTC]

I would definitely rank "Killing Joke" in my top five graphic novels... amazing story.

Mutt-Lii [2006-02-18 18:48:46 +0000 UTC]

Ok, now that I have time to say something here....

It's freaken BRILLIANT!!! This perfectly captures the essence of "Mr. J"!

After having to watch him get turned into a Meth clinic reject on the new animated "The Batman" (I can't stand that show), it's nice to see the dignified and simultaneously psychopatic version of him in your style

I can get over how much texture you leave in the drawing, adn then the expressions.... cripes, it's just all around awesome. You have a serious talent for this stuff...

It's just Mr. J chiilin at Arkham...
