Description Taiwan Railwayas DT650 is the same engine as the Japanese National Railways (JNR) Class D51 from Japan. Built by Kawasaki, Mitsubishi, Kisha Seizo, and Hitachi between 1939 and 1945. In the 1930s, with the recovery of Japan domestic economy, the demand for railway freight transportation increased greatly, and the use of machinery vehicles gradually resumed manufacturing. Under this trend, Taiwan's demand is increasing. Influenced by the Japanese D51 design and operation success, the Governor-General of Taiwan Railway has been ordering the D51 since 1939, and the railway freight transport in Taiwan has entered a new era.

Before World War ll starts, four of the D51s were imported to Taiwan. The first one wasn't the first D51. Accidents caused it to repeat again which cause everything to be unequal. In this case, the JNR 9600 (Taiwan Railways DT580) terminated by the order of the D51. Hitachi and built five D51s for the war during World War ll. After the war ended in 1945, all D51s were classified as DT650 by the Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA). Mitsubishi Heavy Industries built several D51s for the TRA, but they were never clssified as D51 but DT650. Today, four of them are preserved. One of them is DT668, DT668 is now operable for tourism.
