Description An experiment.

My hubby bought me a small box of Nupastels, so I painted a hyena to play with mixed media ideas. I over-worked this, but that is ok. Sketch only took about 20 minutes, but I don't think I recorded quite enough anatomical information. I learned a bit more about the best way to approach my traditional pieces, though, and learning is the important part. Eventually, I'll find the happy medium between including too much detail and not enough in my pre-painting sketches.

Also, I love the shapes hyena figures make. :3

Watercolor, pastel, pen, and gouache on 90lb. watercolor paper (avoid 90lb. paper if you can -- I hope to try 140lb. soon).

Absolutely beautiful. You've stylised the animal without compromising its anatomy. Fantastic.

Thanks, Dark! That is something I aim for, no matter what I do. The best stylizations are based on sound anatomical knowledge. :3 The work of ~davidsdoodles is proof of that! ^_^

I usually am, too, but with practice, it is easier to overcome that fear. I've been doing it all year, and it has gotten much less scary!

I like this, I've never quite seen this style of traditional art before ... you don't see pastels used very often, but this came out really nice. I like the added stylization you gave to it, too.

I think pastels are more popular than you might realize, but certainly they aren't talked about as much. Not in any of the art history classes I've taken, anyways. But they have been around for at least a few hundred years. :3

If you like the stylization on this, just wait until you see another drawing I intend to post later this week. It doesn't have pastels, but it certainly has style! ^_^

This is still a well-rendered piece, and I'm envying your use of color. Always be glad for the experiments!
