I like to start a bun with my hair tied back with an elastic. It doesn't slip that way (I have super fine straight hair), and I know some people find that they can make a good bun with shorter hair that way too. You might try it.
It would be awesome if you uploaded a pic of the hairfork you made.

Yep. I use liver of sulfur patina and then polish off the highlights.

I would really like to see something in the style of a hair comb a mix of the brass and copper. I LOVE the hairsticks though.

I'll have to think of how to make that work, but I'm glad you like my sticks.
I could do a hairfork like this in the braided twist: [link] (Sorry, realized that I need to put photos of those in my gallery over here.)

So 22 no matter what material/length?

Ah, if it's brass or copper or both, and under about, oh, eight inches. Seeing as any longer than eight inches won't really work for hair... And silver would definitely cost quite a bit more.

Sounds brilliant. I have to get my staff finished for DC, so that is one of the priorities right now, and seeing about gear I need to gather. Have to borrow a laptop, might see about borrowing a better video cam, and I definitely need to remember to sign up for the parade.... hmmmm.. looks at the dragon con schedule... going to be most interesting indeed.

Pretty much the last week in august is the very latest. I have to have time to shoot with it, and get used to it and make any adjustments to my gear as the thing starts 2nd of Sept.

Thanks so much Elly. I kinda stumbled across this technique, and I think there's still a lot to play with here.

And as much fun as these are to make, I suspect I may be making a tut soon.
But I can actually explain it quickly.
For the simpler version:
Take three strands of wire, clamp the ends in your vice. Braid them in a simple three braid. Do it as tight and even as you can with just your fingers, no tools. Clamp the other ends in a pair of vice-grip pliers when you are done. Twist clockwise, pulling slightly away from the vice to keep it neat, until most of the "loops" that form nearly tighten down. Cut the ends neatly, and fuse with a torch. (Yes, fuse, not solder, if you want the nice solid ends you see on mine. I use Oxy-Acetylene for this in a Smith Little Torch.) Now take a hammer, I used a 12oz ball peen on the flat side, and hammer it on a steel block while turning until it's tight. You have to be very even and consistent with this, and you'll need to compare them a lot if you're doing something like hairsticks to make sure they're the same length. (They'll expand as you hammer, of course) Then sand them until you get the scratches and dings out. The better your hammering is, the less sanding you'll need.
For what you see here, it's the same thing, but I made a flat two stranded three braid, so six strands all together.
Make sense?
