Description I was recently given some thicker leather, which is proving quite difficult to work with, so my solution is to stick to simpler shapes and experiment with dye and paint techniques. The design was inspired by a friend's tattoo, though it has ended up looking quite Tolkein-esque, hence the Elven title.

Thank you! I was pleased with the mottled dye effect I achieved here. I must do more masks like this...

Very sleek and elegant, and wearable by male or female, in my opinion.

Thank you very much! I try to aim for a certain amount of androgeny, though it's not always possible, it definitely works for elves..

Although you have other, more complicated (and gorgeous) masks - I think that the mottled dye effect on this is one of my all-time favourites. There's something very deep and rich about it, and the gold accents are perfect.

Thank you!
I was pleased with the dye effect here too. I must experiment more with this sort of thing. It's so tempting, now that I have the airbrush, to make everything uniform and perfect flat colours, and lovely as they can be, I lshouldn't forget that I like the uneven colour of hand tinting too.

The airbrushed effects are stunning, and I'm looking forward to seeing more, but there's something very organic about the hand tinting. It would be hard to get the same effect twice, and I rather like that

It also feels more 'crafted' to me, if you see what I mean? I'm definitely going to play around with more dye methods in the future.

Ooh - a tie-dyed effect. Although... not actually tie-dyed, probably

That could be interesting.. ~ponders~
Yes, I think that could be achieved.

May I ask how you work the leather to form that particular shape?

xothique In reply to Flockie [2007-12-03 08:56:56 +0000 UTC]

Sure! Usually I use a plaster pattern that I have made, however this particular mask was actually moulded over my own face while the leather was wet. It took a lot of patience to get it to remain in shape.
