Koch Rajbongshi is a tribe originally from the ancient Koch kingdom.
The word "Rajbongshi" literally means "royal community".
They have a rich cultural heritage and their own language.

The old Kamarupa kingdom was followed by the Kamata kingdom and the Princely State of Cooch Behar,
which acceded to the Indian Union in 1948.

The Koch Rajbongshi live now in North Bengal, West Assam, Meghalaya, Bangladesh and Nepal.
There are many political and non-political organiztions of this community demanding the creation
of a separate state in West Bengal and Assam to be known as Kamtapur, Kamatapur or Greater Cooch Behar.

In the past, some of these groups waged an armed struggle, but now they work for just a political solution by the peaceful means.

The Koch Ranjbongshi number is estimated to be at 5 million in India alone.
