Marie Galante is an island of the Caribbean Sea located at the south of Guadeloupe and at north of Dominica.
It is a dependency of Guadeloupe, which is a French overseas department.
Discovered and named by Columbus, it was settled by the French in 1648, and became part of the Overseas Department in 1946.
The three counties of Marie-Galante were designated a county community in 1994.
There is a strong call for a separate collectivity, possibly with La Desirade and Les Saintes, free of Guadeloupe.
