A cultural region of Latvia encompassing the eastern part of the historical region of Semigalia. Its main city and cultural center is Jekabpils.
Christianized in 1208 by the German knights, the region formed a Selonian dicese, but in 1226, the Bisphoic of Semigalia replaced it.
Presently the region is mainly inhabited by Latvians, Russians and autochthonous Lithuanians.
Few can still speak a Latgalian dialect, but the Selonian language is extinct.
Nevertheless, there are efforts to revive it and the Selonian culture and ancient customs aswell.
In 2008, the unofficial flag of Selonia was adopted.
