Description
Just decided I needed to play around with some oil pastel crayons for a while. Some of you might remember the sketch and start of this picture. It was back in 2011. I decided to finish it. It's just a simple piece, and I tossed in a bit of a crappy background just because it had gotten spotty from the pastels.
It's really hard to make anything sharp with pastels btw. But over all I'm quite happy with it. It's my first full oil pastel picture since I was in school back in 1999. Anyway, hope you like it.

My oil pastel crayons still lie around mostly unused because I failed at each attempt so far. I can't draw anything sharp, I can't draw without the colours mixing and smearing over each other uncontrollably... I feel I have to watch a tutorial to learn how they are supposed to be used and which possibilities they offer.

But all that makes our drawing even more impressive! Maybe you could record some of your process the next time you use those crayons?

The trick is to draw large! That way you can make small details that aren't that small. But yeah, I did quite small details here, but mostly because my crayons were new and sharp when I started.

Yeah, I tried filming it once but it didn't get any good. Also I work very slow so it's a pain to record it.

Great hint, thanks!

That's true, I imagine it's a lot of work to record and cut everything nicely, so it's perfectly understandable that you don't do it, even if you worked faster
But it's no problem, I'm very sure I'll find enough recordings online. I just prefer to ask friends first as it's a nice way to exchange and keep in touch

You're welcome.

Yeah, but it's not the cutting and such that's a problem, it's the filming without being in the way of the camera and not getting a distorted image because the camera's on the side at an angle and stuff. And also lighting and finding the old recordings to put together with the new ones when last time you filmed was a year ago or two. It's a real problem for me.
Yeah, you'll find better ones online anyway. XD Especially about pastel crayons since I'm not an expert on those.

So it is.

Indeed, I meant the cutting as an additional problem next to the ones you mentioned.
I guess the angle wouldn't be that much of a problem if you have a decent tripod and zoom lens as the process is more important than exact details, but yeah, it all doesn't make the task easier

Ah, ok.

Yeah, I have a tripod, but... yeah, it's still hard to get it right. Much easier that way to film stuff on the computer, like digital art. But I might do it in the future, when I have more time and inspiration again. But hey, I'm here on DA and I actually uploaded stuff the last week. So that's an improvement.

It's true, that's one of the advantages of digital work Congratulations, such achievements are always great!

I like how the horsehair falls in the head and gives a shadow. Also the vivid pastel colours in all the image

Thank you very much. Yes, it became quite colourful. Even though I didn't use any "colourful" colours. But that's oil pastel for you I guess. I like colourful things.
