Description
Quauhnahuac is a large town in central Mexico, squeezed between two immense volcanos. Geoffrey Firmin is an alcoholic British ex-consul, sitting by the bar on the night of the Día de los Muertos as the sounds of the fiesta outside drift in through dense heat.

"I think I know a good deal about physical suffering. But this is worst of all, to feel your soul dying."

As he drains a third bottle of tequila, his mind feverishly relives the past, searching for hope of redemption in the memories of his ex-wife Yvonne.
