Description Tabitha had always been a late riser.  Her immortality and her new nocturnal schedule hadn't changed that a bit.

She sat up in the big bed, stretching bat-like wings and raking a hand through her hair. It was long this evening. She been either too wasted or too tired that morning to get rid of most of the detail of her glamour. She'd remembered to take of her dress, though. She smiled to herself. In her past life, girls like her were sluts, tarts, party girls who would sour when real life hit them. Girls who would fade with age and have nothing to show for it. Maybe that was still true for human girls, but Tabitha wasn't human.

Her skin still smelled strongly of incense, a vice Zeke had turned her onto; as if she didn't have enough vices already. She knew instinctively that her voice would be throatier for it, rougher. It didn't matter. No matter what she did, she was still pure sex appeal.

She slid out of bed and padded downstairs, undoing the rest of her glamour as she went, following the scent of coffee.

"You're awake!" Marie pointed out as Tabitha entered the kitchen. The cat-like fae arched an eyebrow.

"So I am," she said, feeling Remus pull at the edges of her mind. He wanted out. She pushed him back with a warning not to bother her until she was fully caught up with the rest of the pack.

"What time did you come home last night?" Cael asked. Tabitha shrugged as she prepared herself a cup of coffee with cream, sugar and cinnamon.

"Dawn," she replied before taking a sip. It burned her raw throat slightly and she smiled her joker's smile.

Just then James entered the room.

"Tabitha, your body is quite lovely-"

"You would know, James," Tabitha retorted, her smile still in place, but it was the wrong kind of feral to be her normal smile.

"But would you mind putting on more than your under garments?"

Moving like smoke, Tabitha was at the Seelie fae's side in an instant, wrapping around him like a lover, or a python.

"Why?" she purred, nuzzling the crook of his neck, "All the bits you don't want to see are covered. Or are you jealous, hm? Do you want me to stop flaunting the body you held in your arms not so long ago?"

She pressed a soft, almost loving kiss to the nape of James' neck before he twisted and gently pushed her away.

"Not today," he almost growled, "Not this Tabitha. Just don't."

"Whatever," Tabi laughed, half-dancing half gliding across the kitchen to the cupboard that held their jars of honey.

"Whore," Cael said fondly as Tabitha took a gulp of honey.

"Emo," she retorted.

Marie sighed. Another trying day with her pack.

"Hey, you guys know tonight's New Year's, right?" Zeke said from his place at the kitchen table.

"No shit?" Tabitha said, "Excellent."

"Thought you might like it," the troll rumbled as Tabitha pulled up a chair and slid into it, "Hordes of drunks ready to spend all their cash, thinking they're on top of the world."

"Hey, if humans can eat and drink themselves silly on holidays, so can we," Tabitha pointed out with a smile, "We just have….an alternative diet. High in red meat."

James winced at this, but the rest of the pack shared knowing smiles and quiet laughter.

"You're gonna get fat, Tabi," Layla said, her gold eyes sparking with mischief and jest.

"Nuh-uh~" Tabitha replied childishly, "I burn off my calories faster than I consume them. High metabolism and vigorous 'exercise'."

Again, James didn't appreciate the joke as much as the rest of the pack.

Later that night, they are dressed to the nines and glamoured to look as human as possible. They still maintain an ethereal sense about them, but it only makes the humans around them stare more, want more.

The city is cold, and reeks of iron, but it's worth it, Tabitha thinks, smoothing the front of her long black dress, and the glamour takes some of the edge off.

People buy her champagne, and they think she's laughing at their jokes, but really she's laughing at them. Laughing at everybody, because she's just a little drunk now. Because being drunk and pretending to not care is better than being sober and meeting James' eye and seeing something that she doesn't know how to place and being hurt.

Just before the ball drops, just before Tabitha is about to take a sleazy drunk's hand to lead him into a dark alley for a bite to eat, James grabs her arm and pulls her back.

"What the…?!"

The Seelie fae pulls her away and deeper into the crowd. Tabitha loses her meal.

"Tabi," he murmurs, just loud enough for the two of them to hear, and it doesn't escape Tabitha that he uses her nickname. Something he hasn't done in years, "Don't."

"Do not presume to tell me what to do, James," Tabitha says, her voice as cold as the wind that whips through the streets of New York.

"I've noticed that ever since we parted, you've been…"

James swallows hard.

"….eating out more," he manages delicately.

"What of it?" the Unseelie fae hisses, "It's no business of yours what I do."

"Tabitha…"

James' free arm is around her waist now.

"I never meant to hurt you."

"You didn't hurt me," Tabitha says.

'I hurt myself by wanting you,' she thinks.

"I did," James says, sliding his grip down her arm until he is holding her wrist, "Bend the truth as much as you like and say what you will, but I hurt you. I'm still hurting you."

"Just drop it, James," Tabitha says, baring her teeth, "I'm hungry and I've lost my dinner date, thanks to you and your fucking sense of honor."

But her voice is more brittle than intimidating.

"Tabi…you know as well as I that fae cannot lie…and you're terrible at hiding the truth. I can see it in your eyes…"

"Shut up!"

"You still love me, don't you?"

"SHUT UP!"

James catches the tear on her cheek.

"I…I never wanted to hurt you…but we are too…it would not have worked. We are so different…"

Tabitha nods at that, willing herself not to cry, but more tears burn in her chest like iron, and they course down her cheeks.

"You are chaos…"

"I know."

Around the countdown starts. James' face is almost too close to hers to focus. Almost within kissing distance.

"You are everything I should hate."

"I know."

"You are…"

Their noses brush as the countdown reaches three.

"Addictive," James murmurs against her lips, before kissing her.

The ball drops and the crowd cheers, other couples kiss and fireworks go off. In the midst of the celebrations, two fae kiss, knowing that if they stay together like this for long, they will destroy each other.

But they're both going insane anyways.

And opposites attract…even if they do negate each other in the end.

And the pain of being together is balanced by the absence of decades-long loneliness.
