Description

A recent picture from...Halloween, actually, I think. We went to the zoo and the butterfly house and that's where this is from.

A very big surprise for me, and quite a pleasant one at that! I was quite certain I hadn't gotten any salvageable shots from that trip but tonight I went to empty out my camera and found this.

I'm extremely proud of this! I think it's one of my best shots, honestly. Maybe I'm wrong but... I think it's pretty good.

I touched it up, cropped it. I mostly just increased saturation and contrast because...well... it seems to be a popular trend. I'm a saturation fiend, honestly, but I always try to tone it down, afraid of overdoing it. But sat-heavy photos are flooding my inbox nowadays so I let myself go crazy with the saturation here. I really like it! Makes that butterfly POP, eh?

This is a blue morpho. Silly morphos used to confuse me so much. I'd see these guys EVERYWHERE but their wings were always closed like this so I never realized they were morphos. But now I'm wise to their tricks.

That all being said, I really want comments and critiques on this! Please!

Very nice photo. The focus is nice and crisp. I think the saturation is nice, especially considering that, with its wings closed, the morpho would be mostly brown. With the increase in saturation, those little bits of blue, yellow, and pink we can see are so much more vibrant and striking. The same applies to the body, with the streaks of color. The soft focus of the background as well as the lighter colors help the darker butterfly stand out pretty well.

Thank you so much! Thank you for taking the time to write a comment like that. I always worry about saturation butterfly pictures because of how it can make their wings look. I was worried about the green in the background when I saturated this but as long as the butterfly remains the focus, that's the important thing.

I knew immediately when I saw this thumbnail that it was a blue morpho. I went to a butterfly house and tried and tried to get a wing spread shot of one of these suckers. In fact, I was so frustrated by the end of it I was calling them "Mo' fo's" instead of morphos, and so was my brother, who had the same intention with his own camera. I took so many pictures of the underside of their wings I would recognize it anywhere. LOL Great pic!

Lol, yeah, they're quite the tricky buggers! I saw plenty of blue morphos but they always flap their wings so much, it's impossible to get a shot of their wingspread.

Thanks, though! At least the underside of their wings are pretty interesting still. Just not that vibrant blue.

Yeah that's what my brother and I said... at least the underside is pretty too... or else we'd have a bunch of pictures of ugly butterflies. lol

I absolutely love how you can see a bit of the blue on the inside of the wings! And the saturation level doesn't bother me so much in this image. Overall, it's a really beautiful shot!

Thanks! I did have fun with the saturation but I didn't really try to go overboard. To me, it doesn't look like all that much saturation but my eyes aren't really the type to notice over-saturation unless it's obvious.

I don't think it's oversaturated at all, but I don't die of saturation unless it's super intense XD

Lol, well, my problem is that I rarely notice the purple fringe that extra saturation can cause. That's what I'm always worried about.

It depends on your computer. My netbook sucks at that because its monitor saturation is terrible, but on my parents' computers I see everything vibrantly XD

Oh, lovely! This is perfectly framed and shows off the wings beautifully. The amount of detail is amazing, from the tiny little feet to it's eyes, and then those gorgeous wings. Really will done! C=

Thank you! It's not very often my camera can focus on the small details but it's a hell of a lot better than my old camera was. The butterfly looks so angry though! He just looks like he's glaring at me.

Good to see that James Dean still has the same effect on women, even when a butterfly. And even when the woman is a lesbian.

Also, I think that's the first time someone's called me a woman in ages. Hee.

Well, then maybe Butterfly James Dean has that effect on men as well.

Nice job getting so up and personal with the butterfly- it looks like it would have been a really difficult shot, but it's totally worth it.

Heh, actually, these butterflies were rather tame. They're quite used to people, especially photographers. Thank you though!
