I started working on this back in August so parts of the painting are a little bit wonky. I really enjoy painting enchanted forests!

You can put such wonderful energy and colour into your pictures without any sort of clutter, and the general cohesive feel of the entire piece is amazing!
Softer, more pastelly colours I thought was very hard to pull off, especially in a style where you still imbue the picture with depth and a very clear 3D sense without it seeming odd or forced but you do it so well. I love staring just beyond the two, into the fading trees. That effect is supercool and the subtle swirls and markings everywhere just add to the magic of the piece.
There is a real sense of scale here too and how little Penny and Julie are compared to the great forest. I agree magical forests are great to paint and the mushrooms are adorable ahaaa.

*Q* I think what really caught my eye the most is how fantasy-ish the colour scheme is, I don't know how you do it but you always have a really coherent and... comfortable? AHHAHA colour scheme! Such a fresh lovely green and... fresh... lovely... blue? AHAHHA, I am not sure if that makes sense at all but those it's such a lovely colour scheme ;-; <33 The mushrooms are a lively touch as well and EEK, HOW DID YOU KNOW I LOVE MUSHROOMS?! AHAHHA >U< <33 OOoo goodness I love the little backlights (it always - makes things look a bit more magical ahh?) and expressions ohh the little dance-y pose of your character (Pentello? Oops, as for the print, if I were to email you the full sized image would you be able to print it off yourself? It would be less expensive for you, there would be less chance of it getting damaged in the mail, and post confuses me still. If you lived closer I could print out a nice big one for cheap at my school and bring it to you. ;u;

TEXT WALL!
I love mushrooms and forests too! I'm pretty sure we've rambled to each other about our love of forests and mushrooms on Skype before. xD I went through so many ideas for this, first it was a headshot of Julie, then it was Julie riding a giant bunny and somehow that transformed into her walking in a forest and then Pentello got added in there too since I thought they matched! The trees also at one point had faces, then they were covered in carved runes, then the runes were glowing, then there were fireflies everywhere. I'm usually more decisive but I just kept wanting to add more and more to this. ;u;
Aha I'm pretty much equally busy all the time so I have no concept of what midterm week is like Dx they space everything out very well but I'm always working on atleast a project, essay, or studying. Luckily everything I'm doing is super fun. I just made a full dress out of book pages, and I'm working now on building a wood treasure chest trunk. (My painting class has a 3D/sculpture component but our teacher's awesome and all the projects are very fun.)

I tend to have spikes in busy-ness and then periods of nothingness AHAHAHA, so it's why I have a tendency to disappear when things get busy ;___; Like exams are really really near now and I kind of had to have a hiatus away from dA because of school lately (LIKE, A FEW MONTHS?! Actually this isn't related to #MemoirduLune . As for the group we're not really sure. We pretty much have everything ready for it, but myself and =wispywaffle who created the group don't have enough free time to manage it right now. She's in an intensive IB program and I'm at uni, however we do both still really want to open it up. c:

I actually paint everything on one layer in Sai with the brush tool because of it's lovely blending capabilities. I get more control and pressure sensitivity with the brush than the water tool. At the very end though, just with this piece, I did use the water tool to brush a little bit of lighter blue over the trees in the distance to give them a more watery feel and make them less flat.

wow, i usually have at least 60 layers, but yeah, mine are cel shaded also, i can only wish i could do it like you
But i totally get it, i do all on one layer when i do portraits,then it's really good to use the brush.

I used to cell shade too and when I first started trying to paint last year I used about 200+ layers and gradually started using less as I got more comfortable. I'd say the more layers you use, the easier is is to keep the image clean and polished looking. =)

I used to use that many layers too, hell i still have that many layers if i do more characters, but on my chibi drawings i have like 40 layers.
I started using it about 2 years ago, love it
i guess i should try do draw them on less layers too, i should practice
