With the latest announcements of SF5 and KH3, it's super awesome to see the polls being all cool and current.
So I wanted to make sure the designs looked like their latest iterations. Which basically boiled down to buttons and beard 
: I was repeatedly switching the "Hot Ryu" beard on and off through the process - I also tried goatees and side-burns and stubble and such, but finally decided on keeping the main piece representing his standard look and doing bonus beard.
Also, I just realized 50% of this description has been describing a beard that isn't even there. :T So, to jump to a different topic: beard. Oh whoops.
EDIT: It seems like a couple people are seeing the shadow as Akuma - which totally works as well - but I just thought I'd clarify that I intended it to be Evil Ryu from SSFIV: AE, with the heartless shape in his chest mimicking Evil Ryu's scar. Anyway, that's all - zed out.

This one I had a little harder of a time marrying the two concepts but then I remembered Ryu's sometimes title, the Wandering Warrior. Then it ALL fell into place.
It makes sense that, if he could, Ryu would travel to other worlds to compete with their fighters. Would certainly give new meaning to the SF term "world warrior."
He's even similar to Sora in that, he's not actively a protector or justice bringer. They have largely personal goals (finding friends/attaining total mastery) but both of them are good-natured enough to help those they come across and end up saving the day because of it.
Ryu ALSO has a childhood best friend that's a competitive rival! Although Ken never turns as antagonistic as Ryu does.
Would sort of be fun if Ryu traveled to other fighting game franchises like Mortal Kombat, Soul Calibur, or Killer Instinct. Or even better, adjacent Capcom worlds! I could totally see it, Mega Man, Resident Evil, Ace Attorney, Viewtiful Joe. Amaterasu could be a summon. I'd play the shit out of that!

Well, I try to do that for all of your remixes because they lend themselves to "how did these two end up fused?" thinking. Plus I liked your big shoes/no shoe compromise by giving him platform sandals.
That's a little different though. Smash Bros. is fun but it's more just a playable toybox, not really a narrative crossover like Kingdom Hearts where the worlds have plot significance. I mean Smash Bros. used to have that for Melee and Brawl but got rid of the Subspace Emissary for the next game because people uploaded it to Youtube. (Which is a stupid reason to remove that, but I digress.) The most recent Marvel vs. Capcom does more with the story and who these characters are, but it has a little too much going on for me. Marvel already has so many disparate parts and Capcom has so many varied franchises under its umbrella. It's not so much a head to head as it is a giant mega crossover of multiple worlds with no cohesive through line.
Like going off of that Nintendo crossover thing for the Metroid Star Fox remix thing, imagine if you play a game where you start as Mario in the Mushroom Kingdom. Princess Peach gets captured by Bowser but he has some new minions that Mario can't beat, then Link is literally dropped out of the sky and spur of the moment they team up. Seeing a common foe, they follow Bowser to see he's capturing Pokemon and they free them but a particular one, Pikachu, is grateful and decides to follow them. Now you have the trinity of Nintendo's biggest icons on a trip to as many worlds as you can go to. Yoshi's Island, Termina, Dreamland, Inkopolis, whatever. With the three initial group and their quest though there's an anchor so the whole thing doesn't fly apart at the seams and there's an actual reason they're fighting together apart from multiplayer team matchups.
Or if you did want to keep it to a straight head on clash. Just have two very different worlds colliding. Like to keep Ryu in the picture, Street Fighter and . . . I don't know, Deus Ex. That would be a real clash. The tone of the two franchises are so different and the actions of the characters are no longer self-contained. Ryu would have to navigate a world of conspiracies and shadows and suddenly not every problem he faces could be solved by a hadouken.

Nice analysis! Even I didn't realize they had all those parallels. All my brain power was stuck on the fact that Sora has really big shoes and Ryu has really no shoes.
And yeah, Ryu totally owns his space in Smash Bros - more crossovers would suit him well. As far as Capcom goes, if you don't mind some Marvel characters too, then the Marvel vs Capcom series sounds pretty perfect.
