The barcode structure shows you where the data goes ( [link] ) then by using a high error correction level you can alter pixels of the barcode without disrupting the message....

(sorry, I couldn't really get it 
Oh, one more question: are you able to read those codes which have more then one alignment symbols? my cam never manages to decode it.

Yup, random experimenting! Though it normally works ok so long as the error correction level is high enough. I can normally read the bigger codes but it does depend on the light, my phone cameras not very good...
