Description Mam-se Mama-sa mama-ma-kos-sa. No, I am not invoking the bridge section of Michael Jackson's Wanna Be Startin' Somethin', because he ripped that line from Soul Makossa by Cameroon's own Manu Dibango. A bit of an eclectic, Manu has produced some of Africa's best jazz-informed output, and some of it's worst commerical dreck over the past 4 decades, but he is nothing if not always trying; he has collaborated with folks like Fela Kuti, Peter Gabriel and Herbie Hancock, and his sax playing is technically demanding yet completely accessible. Soul Makossa brought him fame in the US in 1972, and is a proto-disco record whose 4/4 meets West African melodic conventions eventually got sterilized for mass market consumptin, but who knew?

Cretacolor graphite pencil on bristol + some digital

Yes, I am really digging the halftone filter these days. And if I could get a real handle on zipatone, I'd really go to town.

I can almost hear the horns, feel the drums and tap my feel lot of energy locked up in those strokes.

even before i read your comment, after just a couple of seconds of looking at the portrait and the colour, the first thing that came up to my mind is jazz.

I like this a lot, it has so much character, lil but gnarly.

The halftone effect is nice, although for myself if it was more russett coloured, or sanguine, I would like it even more.

Ooo shhheeeaaat! I love this. I really love the looseness and how even though you can obviously see what this is a drawing of, the lines and patches of colours are almost sort of abstracted. Like they accidentally created an image. Almost. Sort of. I love you, I mean it.

I have to be honest Zeruch...I'm not too fond of the color. The rendering as always is perfect.

I actually started with a much more muted set of ochres and then experimented with even more subdued verdant palettes...in the end I opted for this (at least until I do some more painting and processing on it) as a kind of connection to common color themes in West African art and to the "hot" atmosphere of the musical styles prevalent there.

But there are certainly other possibilities. Often enough I simply stop at a point where it is tolerable, because otherwise I would simply tweak ceaselessly for days and weeks.

I was actually listening to Starting Something when this came up.

Interesting picture to say the least, awesome usage of halftone and the yellow is most delicious.
