Sally Acorn (サリーどんぐり Sarī Donguri)~
Sonic and Sally were childhood friends who used to play together in the royal palace during the time of the Great War. When the war started to go badly for the Mobians, Sonic and Sally were sent to the sanctuary of Knothole Village with many of the other children. When Dr. Robotnik eventually took over, the two were still in the haven of Knothole. As children, both Sonic and Sally witnessed the formation of the Original Freedom Fighters, and decided that years later they would follow in their footsteps.
During their life as Freedom Fighters, Sonic and Sally regularly got on each others nerves, usually due to the former's ego and attitude and the latter's impatience with said qualities. However, over time this was usually used to hide their growing infatuation with one another. Despite their disagreements, the two had a strong commitment to the Freedom Fighters and to one another, and as their commonalities grew, so their love and respect for one another
Sally was temporarily involved in a love triangle between herself, Sonic and Geoffrey St. John, head of her father's Secret Service. After Sonic secretly stole the Sword of Acorns to try and de-roboticize his father, pressure began to mount from the Secret Service as they linked Sonic to the theft. Geoffrey, now King Elias' adviser, worked hard to impress Sally while he was busy antagonizing Sonic; he convinced Elias to take away Sonic's knighthood. During a long period of reconstruction that followed after Robotnik's defeat, Sally was involved with royal duties and could not make time for her former compatriots. With Bunnie's advice, Sally choose Sonic to be her royal consort, and one day her husband. Following an encounter with the Xorda alien invaders, Sonic was lost in space for a year; Sally assumed, along with the world, that he was dead. When Sonic returned from space after a year (a month and a half due to the Theory of Relativity) Sonic and Sally's love was rekindled. However, Sally decided that she could not bear the pain of losing him again after witnessing Sonic get injured by Dr. Eggman's "daughter" Mecha, and tried to convince him to give up his heroics. Sally had hoped to groom Sonic as the next King, but Sonic was mortified by the idea of not fighting against Eggman's growing threat. Sonic reluctantly declined, which earned him a slap across the face. After a heated argument Sally gave Sonic an ultimatum: choose to be at her side, or to be a hero. Sonic was unable to answer, and a brutal end of their relationship followed.
When King Max fell ill due to poisoning by Patch (an evil version of Antoine from the parallel universe of Anti Mobius, who has designs on ruling the Kingdom), he decided that the only way for Sally to rule the Kingdom of Acorn in his place was to marry Antoine. Sally reluctantly agreed, partially due to her anger with Sonic and partially because of her duty as princess. Before Patch could ascend the throne with Sally as his Queen, Prince Elias stepped in and retakes the throne. A desperate Patch attempted to murder Elias, but was interrupted by Sonic, who sent Patch back to his reality.
Some time later, Sally joined the Freedom Fighters on a sting operation against a group of villains who were (apparently) moving in to purchase the Master Emerald from Rouge the Bat. During this time, Sally admitted that seeing Bunnie and Antoine so close made her feel jealous, as well as upset at her emotional distance with Sonic. At Antoine and Bunnie's wedding, when the subject of marriage comes up, Sally flatly remarked she's perfectly happy remaining single.
During a nostalgic visit to the ruins of Knothole, they finally made up and remained friends, though they would've kissed if it weren't for the interuptence of Bean and Bark.
Though it seemed that Sonic and Sally were on their way toward forming a new romance, Sally made a decision with support from Bunnie to "test the waters" with a new person, specifically Monkey Khan. Sonic has shown some jealousy over it, particularly during their journey into the Dragon Kingdom. However, following Khan's return to the Dragon Kingdom Sally took Sonic out to lunch, which in surprise, he willingly accepted.
Later, with the events going on such as Geoffrey St. John betraying Sonic and Mina's song driving the citizens to believe NICOLE is evil, Sonic decides to take Sally on a date to a fancy restaurant. Things seem to go fine until one of the waiters ask them if they plan on "pulling the plug on NICOLE." Another person argues saying that NICOLE is a freedom fighter as well. This gets out of so much that Sonic and Sally decide to leave. The crowd tries to stop them from leaving, only to have Amy threaten them with her hammer demanding them to leave Sonic and Sally alone so that they can enjoy their date. Later, Sonic and Sally go to the Lake of Rings surrounded by fireflies and chao. They tease one another by fighting over who was more jealous of each other's previous relationships. The night ends with Sally asking Sonic if he could slow down a bit so she could be by his side, to which he accepts. Later on while jumping into battle Sonic and Sally shared a kiss. Sadly, their relationship would be put on hold when Sally was Roboticized.
When Sally is back with her organic form. Sonic has shown to retain a great fondness for Sally in the altered reality, expressing particular happiness over her return to organic form.
Dr. Eggman (ドクター・エッグマン Dokutā Egguman)~
Dr. Eggman is Sonic's arch-enemy and nemesis, who he ironically has known longer than anyone else. Because of Sonic's hate of anything unjust, he hold a great mutual hatred for the doctor and his evil schemes to take over the world, and he has spend years rescuing the victims of Eggman's conniving schemes. Whenever Eggman is cooking up a plan to conquer the world, Sonic always shows up and thwarts him. Because they always fight each other to win, Eggman has become a long time rival of Sonic's as well as an enemy. Also, whenever Sonic's anger explodes over injustice, he always makes Eggman the receiving end of this aggression. Despite his dislike of Eggman, Sonic has never really taken account of his adversary. Whenever dealing with Eggman and his evil plots, Sonic remains fully confident that he can spoil his plans and never really takes them seriously. In fact, Sonic is so used to beating Eggman that he considers it an everyday job. Usually, Sonic is rather frank or taunting towards Eggman and will almost always seize the opportunity to tease him with jokes and sarcasm. Sometimes, Sonic even finds Eggman more bothersome and annoying than threating: when he discovered Eggman was behind the Time Eater in Sonic Generations, Sonic just facepalmed and shrugged disapproving. Nevertheless, he remains vigilant about Eggman and his actions, like when he refused to believe that Eggman had turned over a new leaf in Sonic Colors. In the cases Sonic does deem Eggman a legitimate threat though, he becomes very serious about the doctor and targets him with fierce anger. When presented with a more terrible threat that endangers both of them, Sonic is willing to put aside his differences with Eggman and join forces with him to stop it. Even in such cases though, Sonic remains reluctant about it, feeling that teaming up with Eggman is like the end of the world and a dirty job, and will in some cases suspect the doctor has an ulterior motive (which is often proven true).
While Sonic has been know to tease Eggman early on by using his alias instead of his real name (which was possibly given by Sonic), he actually uses this name affectionately, rather than trying to make fun of him.
In spite of Eggman's horrible deeds, Sonic is content with just stopping the doctor and is never out to put him out of commission for good on purpose. Because of Eggman's tendency to survive their encounters and refusal to give up however, the doctor always returns with a new scheme, promoting Sonic to stop him again. As such, Sonic remains forever locked in a conflict with Eggman where it is nearly impossible for both individuals to defeat the other for good, making their battle a never ending one.
Miles "Tails" Prower (マイルテイルスプラウアー Mairusu "Teirusu" Pauā)~
Tails is Sonic's best friend and sidekick. The two have been together since a long time ago, in which the two first meet. They have been best friends for so long that they share a deep brotherly relationship.
Sonic first met Tails on Westside Island, when Sonic decided to explore the area. During one of Sonic's runs, Tails saw Sonic and witnessed him running at high speeds. The young Tails was impressed by this and began to follow him. Sonic soon realized that the young fox was following him, but allowed him to do so, since he was impressed by how Tails could keep up. Still, Sonic remained uninterested in his new follower. All of this changed, however, when Dr. Robotnik began his attack on the island. After being awakened from his nap by the attack and seeing to Tails' safety, Sonic headed out to stop Robotnik, but he could not prevent Tails from joining him and following him all the way.
During the course of their adventure, however, Tails proved to be a great assistance to Sonic, such as by repairing his plane, the Tornado. As such, Sonic came to have great respect for Tails, and the two of them began to form a friendship. At the end of their adventure, when Tails saved Sonic from his fall from the Death Egg, Sonic had built a strong bond with the young fox, and the two became close friends. Tails is the one who knows Sonic more than anyone, and they are like a brothers or a family.
Knuckles the Echidna (ナックルズ・ザ・エキドゥナ Nakkuruzu za Ekiduna)~
Another of Sonic's close friends is his relationship with Knuckles. Ever since Knuckles' introduction, there were recurring and unfinished battles between Sonic and Knuckles. Because of their differences and morals, the two are constantly getting into crossroads, which then become outright fisticuffs. However, they finish the battle tied, or something serves to interrupt the battle before its end. The battle has appeared in the games. It occurs in many games featuring Knuckles since his debut in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. With Sonic's speed paralleling Knuckles' strength in every way, their fights are always climactic.
It should also be noted that in various games, Sonic teases Knuckles whenever Knuckles falls for Eggman's tricks by making a pun out of his name; "Knuckle-head". Sometimes, Sonic teases Knuckles when he sees Knuckles and Rouge together by saying, "Well look who it is... Knuckles and Rouge! You two on a date or something?".
Overall, they are great friends and make a great team. Next to Tails, Knuckles is also Sonic's best friend.
Amy Rose (エイミーローズ Emī Rōzu)~
Amy and Sonic first met when Sonic had to save her from Metal Sonic in Sonic the Hedgehog CD. After that Amy has been madly in love with Sonic, and chases him down wherever he goes. However, Sonic seems annoyed by her affection and disturbed by her over the top displays, and tries to run away or avoid her when she goes overboard. However, when Amy is in trouble, Sonic is always present to save her and they are shown to be good friends. Sonic running away from Amy's affections has become a very frequent gag ever since her first debut. Sonic seems to fear Amy whenever she gets angry and runs away fearfully when she pulls out her Piko Piko Hammer. However, it has been stated that in his heart, he may not dislike her as much as it seems.
In Sonic Adventure 2 when Sonic was in jail and asked Amy to help him get out, she jokingly replies that she'll help him if he'd marry her, to which Sonic refuses. Sonic finds her weird or a pain to him at times such as in Sonic Adventure when Amy wanted to go out with Sonic in Twinkle Park. Out of embarrassment and exasperation he says to himself, "I give up! She's so weird!" or "Ugh, that girl is such a pain!", though he followed after her, regardless of complaint.
Metal Sonic (メタルソニック, Metaru Sonikku)~
Sonic and Metal Sonic have a violent rival/enemy relationship. Eggman created Metal Sonic in order to defeat the real Sonic, believing that something as powerful as Sonic would be able to succeed. Since Metal Sonic contains most of Sonic's abilities, they are almost always fighting with each other.
Metal Sonic has a strong dislike towards Sonic, always trying to prove that he is better then him in every way and even calls Sonic "My loathsome copy", as well as believing that he is the real Sonic. In Sonic Heroes, when Metal Sonic took control of Eggman's fleet, his intentions were to kill Sonic and then build a robot empire, but Sonic and his allies ended up defeating him. Also, in this game, Metal Sonic's real emotions towards Sonic were released. In Sonic's view, Metal Sonic is the worst creation Dr. Eggman has ever made, due to how the robotic hedgehog always causes a lot of trouble for him.
Metal Sonic's hatred for Sonic went on after that, even after Eggman restored him to his robotic slave. He later broke free from Dr. Eggman's control once again in Sonic Free Riders in order to face Sonic, this time in Extreme Gear, but he was defeated once more in a one-on-one race.
Shadow The Hedgehog (シャドウ・ザ・ヘッジホッグ, Shadō za Hejjihoggu)~
Shadow the Hedgehog is Sonic's arch-rival. They look almost identical (to the extent that many characters got them confused in Sonic Adventure 2), and they share almost every ability they have, including Chaos Control. Since they first met they have fought and argued every time they cross paths, even trying to kill each other at times. Anything considered competitive is suitable for their bitter arch-rivalry.
When they first met, Sonic also accused Shadow of copying him, with Shadow maintaining a mutual belief regarding Sonic. Shadow had the same feeling again in Sonic Heroes because of his amnesia.
Their moral differences are as far apart as black and white, always causing the two of them to clash. Sonic has a joyful, carefree attitude that looks for fun adventures, while Shadow has a dark, merciless edge and is known to be the most violent character in the series. Sonic has few limitations on his goals, but Shadow is willing to do whatever it takes to get what he wants, never caring about who or what it affects. Nevertheless, they do not care of each other's views and see this as yet another reason to fight each other.
Out of all the rivals Sonic faces, Shadow is the one whom he struggles most with. Shown in all the clashes between the two, they are nearly equally strong or as strong as the other, with both sides proving to be neither lacking in any category that separates them from skill in their respective prowess. It is shown that while Sonic is becoming faster and more honed than Shadow, Shadow is becoming stronger and more destructive than Sonic. This has only increased the intensity of their arch-rivalry. They have an unshakable need to showcase their growth and improvement for each and every encounter they have.
Despite their conflicting differences, Sonic has been very impressed by Shadow's victories in battle, going so far as to say that Shadow defeating Black Doom and destroying the Black Comet was "sweet". Though Sonic and Shadow rarely tolerate each other, Sonic does respect Shadow to a certain degree. This respect is rarely apparent though, because he and Shadow fight constantly.
Blaze The Cat (ブレイズ・ザ・キャット Bureizu za Kyatto)~
Blaze was designed as a character who was equivalent yet an alternate version of Sonic's character in her debut in the Sonic Rush series. Both have the same duty and similar skills, yet have very different backstories and personalities which is later shown to mix very well in Sonic Rush Adventure as their friendship and mutual understanding grows. There is a contrast between the two protagonists: Sonic being inwardly the free and adventurous, yet outwardly level-headed and cool one, whereas Blaze is the outwardly stoic and blunt, yet inwardly highly emotional one.
Sonic and Blaze first met when she was searching for the Sol Emeralds in Sonic's world in Sonic Rush. At first, Blaze did not care who Sonic was as Cream and a few others told her to seek his help, but she claimed that she does not need anyone to help her. Sonic was quite interested in Blaze to the point where he decided to find her, finding her suspicious. After meeting her and seeing that she was Cream's friend, Sonic found out that Blaze was also stopping the space-time continuum from tearing and therefore is not the enemy. Though Sonic only intended to help her, Blaze started to attack him, selfishly not willing to accept his help and berated him during the battle.
Their battle was a draw where Sonic, who kindly asked her if she can stand up. Blaze realized by Sonic's advice that accepting help from others will benefit her duty and the two become friends and combat partners. When Blaze was called by Eggman to rescue Cream, who was kidnapped by confronting Eggman alone, Sonic willingly trusts her to bring Cream back safely while she trusts him and Tails to confront Eggman Nega.
Later, when Dr. Eggman and Eggman Nega teamed up, Blaze started to lose faith in herself until Sonic showed up and helped her regain it, she discovered that with the power of true friendship she was able to use the power of the Sol Emeralds . After their battle, they said their goodbyes, where Blaze thanked Sonic and the two made a promise that they will meet again. In their next meeting, Sonic ends up in Blaze's dimension, along with Tails, where they work together as allies to stop the Doctors' plans.
Sonic seems to acknowledge Blaze's skills, seeing as how she is one of the few people who is able to equally match him and possibly have the potential to defeat him in direct combat and he holds a great deal of respect for her. Blaze also seems to rely on Sonic the most and has respect for both him and his skills to the point where she considers him as her most trusted ally and friend.
Silver The Hedgehog (シルバー・ザ・ヘッジホッグ, Shirubā za Hejjihoggu)~
Sonic and Silver first met during the events of Sonic the Hedgehog (2006). The two were enemies at first because Silver had traveled though time and was intending to kill Sonic believing that he was responsible for destroying his world by releasing Iblis onto the world and was bent on saving the future. But Silver befriended Sonic when he discovered that Sonic was not the Iblis trigger and that Mephiles the Dark had lied to him. The two worked together to save Princess Elise and when Sonic was killed by Mephiles, Silver realized that they could save Sonic with the power of the Chaos Emeralds. Afterwards Silver teamed up with Sonic and Shadow to defeat Solaris. But since the events of the game were erased from history, Sonic and Silver never met. They do not actually meet until Sonic Rivals where Silver has traveled to the past to bring Eggman Nega back to the future, but Silver seems to be more competitive to Sonic as they raced each other see who would get to Eggman Nega first but later they teamed up with each other at the end to defeat Eggman Nega and also in Sonic Rivals 2 to defeat the Ifrit. It appears that Sonic and Silver do not remember each other from their past adventure since the events of Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) were erased.
Silver seems to have a bit of a disliking towards Sonic mostly because he thinks that he is cheeky and foolish, much the same how Shadow thinks of Sonic at times. Silver's attitude tends to annoy Sonic at times as well as seen in Sonic Rivals when he says, "Yo Silver, you've got an attitude". But they will work together and lay aside their differences whenever the time is right. An example is in Sonic Colors after Silver challenges Sonic to a mission, he asks if he needs any help. In Sonic Generations, Silver is the only rival who wants a friendly fight. He also appeared at the Center of Time after Sonic was knocked out by the Time Eater, Silver says to Sonic: "I know you can do this Sonic!".
Jet the Hawk (ジェット・ザ・ホーク, Jetto za Hōku)~
Sonic and Jet have been rivals since they met, and their relationship is based on their competitive nature and their distinct respect for one another. When meeting with each other for the first time, Sonic was beaten by Jet when facing him on an Extreme Gear. However, Sonic was left rather impressed by Jet's skills and instantly recognized him as a new rival.
During Eggman's first EX World Grand Prix, Sonic was not exactly fond of Jet as he constantly taunted and insulted his attempts at mastering Extreme Gear, often getting very angry at him. While thinking Jet was rather full of himself, Sonic still recognized his skills as an Extreme Gear rider and held a determined, albeit one-sided at the time, rivalry with him. Whenever he was around him, Sonic would keep a professional, yet competitive, attitude around Jet. Eventually, Sonic settled his own dispute with Jet when he beat him in a race. At the end of Sonic Riders, Sonic had a more friendly relationship with Jet, as each of them had respect for one another, and promised each other to compete once again, though they both still remained firm rivals.
Since defeating Jet, Sonic has hold a more relaxed and friendly attitude towards Jet, taking his insults and rash determination to beat in a race him in stride. Nevertheless, Sonic's rivalry with Jet remains as strong as ever, and he will gladly, if given the right opportunity, face him in a race for excitement and fun. However, even when determined to beat Jet, Sonic does not wish to have any unfair advantages, and is willing to give Jet both the chance to prove himself and face him at his best. Despite how many times they face each other, Sonic always looks forward to his next rematch with Jet.
