Not at all! Your style is so fun, and I love all the history! I'm a medievalist undergraduate, so I'm always happy to find more historians! But I'm kinda shamefully bad at my classical history >.>... so your Hetalia stuff has actually taught me a lot about Ancient Greece.
P.S. The flash in your Ask Mama Greece account with how Rome and Hellas met... FUNNIEST EVER. (Especially him calling her Graecia, I dunno why, but it's my headcanon that calling another nation by your name for them can be either rude or affectionate and I think with him it's a bit of both. XD Oh, Rome.)

;w; Thank you so much! I'm so flattered you have no idea. >w<
I recently renewed my interest in Classical history last year (my first year of university haha) so I'm thinking about switching my major to classics (or art history, or linguistics, etc.). I'm still really bad at... pretty much all other aspects of history, haha. But I love learning about pretty much any time period in any place. Everything is fascinating when you explain it in the right way, I think. I'm still trying to find "the right way" in my own comics and trying to hit the sweet spot between educational and entertaining, haha. ;w;
Aw man, I'm glad you liked that. That was basically the impression I got from class, hahaha. Of course there's a lot more to their relationship than that and I'm sure there'll be lots of comics from me in the future about it. XD Hahaha, I totally agree with your headcanon on names, omg. Greece calls Nubia "Aithiopia" ("Land of burnt faced people" or something to that effect) so I wonder how the Nubians might have reacted to that, hmmm. XD
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
chocoroco In reply to Hapo57 [2012-02-21 02:37:00 +0000 UTC]
Heh, I'm actually also quite the linguistics nerd, so I approve of all your possible majors XD. I think as long as you really love learning the stuff (and have good teachers!) you'll be happy with whichever one you pick. And yeah, teachers are a serious part of making history come alive and be fascinating! Your comics are doing a pretty dang good job of that
Oh, geez, I'm sure Nubia just luuuuurved that. XD Yeah, I write a lot of (terrible) Roman Empire and various medieval to early modern European fic, and I spend wayyyy too much time paying attention to what everybody calls each other, haha.

Hahaha, really? :'D I've only taken Ling 101 so far but it seems really cool... there just don't seem to be a wide range of interesting Ling classes here. X_x My dad is set on the idea of me becoming a philologist, and it does sound like something I'd be interested in. I might actually major in Classical Language since I'm taking Ancient Greek. XD;
>w< Thank you! I'm always happy to hear my comics are doing their job.
Hahaa, I doubt there's a thing as too much attention when you're writing about things like that. ;w;

chocoroco In reply to Hapo57 [2012-02-23 03:50:13 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, Linguistics is awesome! I'm in my third Linguistics class at my university right now, Historical Linguistics. It's bizarre and interesting and fun! I actually have, uh, no idea what a philologist is... *looks it up* OH! That is pretty interesting. I dunno what the classes for it would be like though XD.
You're welcome!
Yeeeeeah... Probably not, but I worry I'm a little pedantic about it. Then again, I know there are some of us out there who are into accuracy in Hetalia fan works! I know I'm always like "OH GOD" when I come across fics and such and for no particular reason European countries are using the Japanese names for one another. >.< I think the worst (in that they occur most often) instances are "Doitsu" and "Iggy." It can ruin a whole fic for me... >.>
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Hapo57 In reply to chocoroco [2012-02-23 04:08:41 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, a philologist is basically a historical linguist. I'd LOVE to take a class like that, but there doesn't seem to be one here yet :III the closest I have is Ancient Greek. XD
OH MAN
I KNOW RIGHT
I got into Hetalia relatively early and I knew bad things were going to happen when it got big... and they did... >____> But that makes historical!Hetalia all the more rare and exciting and worthwhile to me. XD
I've had people tell me that they wished I was writing Hetalia. o_o;; hahaha, I'm not that ambitious, haha, but I would like to write dumb comics to make history more accessible to people, especially young'uns. ;w;
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
chocoroco In reply to Hapo57 [2012-02-23 18:15:42 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I guess it is! And Ancient Greek is pretty cool, if ridiculously hard. >.< I'm in Latin, which isn't exactly easy either, but not as insane as Greek (according to my Classics major friend). I took Spanish for like 10 years before this so I keep doing Latin wrong, though XD
Yup, get enough people in a fandom like this and stupidity naturally occurs. :< But yeah, there is good historical!Hetalia, so there's hope! I've been considering setting up a Historical Hetalia club on dA, actually, cuz there is one, but they don't allow certain pairings, and their justifications for why seem pretty close minded and (ironically!) lacking in historical understanding... which for me is just as bad as people who ship countries because it would be kawaii desu. >.>
Heh, you wouldn't do badly at it! I think you have the core idea down... but the great thing about the web is you don't have to write THE Hetalia, you can write A Hetalia, i.e. "dumb comics to make history more accessible to people," so yay!
BTW, have you ever seen Hark! A Vagrant? I think you'd like it!
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Hapo57 In reply to chocoroco [2012-02-23 18:20:20 +0000 UTC]
Agreed! XD I took French for 6 years (plus nearly everything in Canada is written bilingually) so I'm sure it would have some impact on taking Latin. XD
Haha, really? If that's the case, then you should go for it! XD
Exactly, it would be impossible to do alone. That's the fantastic thing- people of the world coming together and sharing their own insights and stereotypes about the world. XD
Aw man yes, Hark a Vagrant is absolutely fantastic. I spend hours re-reading those comics sometimes. XD
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
chocoroco In reply to Hapo57 [2012-02-23 19:00:47 +0000 UTC]
Haha, yeeeeah, French is even further from Latin than Spanish is, so your instincts might be even worse than mine! XD I can't tell you how many times I've started to translate a sentence into Latin, thought, "Well, this is easy," and then realized I was translating it into Spanish. >.> Force of habit!
Yeah, I think I might! I should probably put more stuff up first, though, lol.
Hahaha, that's... that's the best description of the Hetalia fandom I've ever read. XD
Yay, me too! I was so psyched cuz I got both of the books for Hanuka and I was like "OMG my life is compleeeete," cuz now I can reread them incessantly on PAPER. XD In other words, I can do it on airplanes!

I had a similar issue when I took Chinese after taking Japanese... huge mistake. XD It's true that Japanese inherited a lot of Chinese characters and pronunciations, but the languages are so radically different. @_@
Haha, thanks. XD
The more people I meet on dA, the closer that dream is to becoming reality, haha. Have you ever read Maaf? It's one of the most well done Hetalia fan comics I've ever seen. *_*
Oh man, lucky! ;w; My friend has one of the books *so jealous* hahaha. XDD

chocoroco In reply to Hapo57 [2012-02-24 05:26:08 +0000 UTC]
Haha, oh God, I bet that was pretty bad. Especially because they're character writing and not alphabets or usually even written in syllabaries! So it's not even like in Latin where I can look at the word and see "oh, it has an e on the end of the verb, it's Latin and not Spanish!" >.>
Oh, man, I haven't actually read Maaf! Is it here on dA? I'd love to read it!
Haha, yeah, the books were like by far one of my favorite presents this year! I did a little happy dance and hugged my parents half to death, lol. Those books are so preeeetty, too, like their design looks nice!

Oof, yeah, I've heard about the ma/ma/ma/ma thing. It's like it's designed to be hard to speak, like English looks like someone really hated children learning to spell XD
Thanks! Yay, new comic to read!

Yeah, she just put up on the Hark! site a few weeks ago that she wants to work on a larger project, so her personal tumblr will have silly little comics, but there won't be any Hark! A Vagrant updates for a while. I'm excited for what she's making, but I'm gonna have withdrawal. XD

Yeah, anyone who gets to travel is lucky! Especially to another continent. Let's see, where've I been... well, I took that trip around Europe with my family when I was younger (the one I've mostly forgotten). That was like 4 countries in a month, which was intense! I think I mostly remember being tired after a long train ride in France XD. And then I got to go to Spain a few summers ago! I get to go back for thesis research at some point! And then Mexico a couple times. But I've actually never been to Canada. >.> I really want to see it, though.

Hapo57 In reply to chocoroco [2012-03-01 23:04:10 +0000 UTC]
Hahaha, a trip around Europe? That's awesome. ;w; My dad travels a lot but usually I'm stuck in school so the rest of us have to stay behind. XD
Hahaha, I've never been to Mexico (The closest I've been was Arizona) but it sounds like a really interesting place. >w< But yeah, come up North! Depending on where you are in the States that could be anywhere from Vancouver to St. Johns, haha. I doubt you'd want to come as far north as I live though, haha. My city is the furthest north of all of the provincial capitals (not counting the territories in the far far far north, of course. XD) ...And my province is the red neck of the country but we still have interesting things to see, haha. I haven't travelled within Canada as much as I'd like to... haha...
Other than England I've been to Australia (in the summer, so it was "winter" there but still warmer than our summer. Everyone there was so concerned we were freezing!) and Japan (on a school trip, so... it was interesting. XD)
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
chocoroco In reply to Hapo57 [2012-03-02 21:50:47 +0000 UTC]
Haha, I had no idea Canada had a red neck! Lessee, I come from California but I'm in the middle of the country for school (St. Louis to be precise!). So I guess if when I'm home I go North I get to B.C.? And I have no idea what province is above Missouri XD.
Man, I wanna go to Australia so badly! And Japan, but not necessarily with school, haha.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Hapo57 In reply to chocoroco [2012-03-02 22:05:10 +0000 UTC]
Above Missouri would probably be Manitoba or Ontario, I guess? XD I used to live in Iowa, I should know this... hahaha.
But yeah, come up to B.C. Being their neighbour I spend a lot of time there. XD; If you stick around Victoria/Vancouver the weather is pretty mild (albeit grey) but the scenery totally makes up for it. It would probably be similar to California in some respects, haha. I've never really been to Vancouver properly but Victoria's amazing. I also stayed in Ucl... Uceu... Ucluelet once. One day I will figure out how to spell it. XD
I wouldn't want to be in either Australia or Japan in the summer, it gets wayyyy too hot there (so I hear). Then again when I was a wee young'un and went to Disney Land in California for Christmas... I had a really hard time adjusting to the heat and lack of snow. X_x I don't have a high tolerance for heat. XD

chocoroco In reply to Hapo57 [2012-03-04 22:58:28 +0000 UTC]
Heh, Iowa and Missouri are further apart than you'd think... I think Ontario sounds right? Anyway, yeah, I really wanna visit Victoria! It looks so pretty and I dunno if you've ever heard of LoadingReadyRun, but they do sketch comedy, and that's where they're based out of.
Haha, really, it was hot in LA in December? Usually it's just 50-65 or so... I guess the lack of snow would be weird if you're used to snow, though. XD For me, coming from Northern California, the biggest difference is how SMOGGY L.A. is, haha.

Ah well, Canadian provinces are pretty huge so I don't think I'm too far off the mark.
I'll consult a map... Yep, both are under Ontario. XD
Victoria's really gorgeous! Definitely go if you get a chance. >w<
No, I've never heard of it. I might have to look it up. XD
agghhh that is hot what are you talking about.
Oh right Fahrenheit uh uh that's about 10-20 C I still consider that fairly warm (When I lived in the States and the temperature reached the 70s I just... never went outside. XD) But yeah, I'm used to temperatures around -30 C or so for December. This year has been mild, but a few years ago it was -59 D:
aghjlsi smog! I'm rarely in big cities so I'm not used to smog either. XD;

If you wanna watch their stuff, their site is loadingreadyrun.com. A few of my favorites that you can search for in the archives are "Dinosaur," "Who You Gonna Call?" and "The Deal." But there are lots of good other ones! Don't get overwhelmed by the archive, heh, try clicking just the LRR tag in the archives if you want to see just their sketch comedy and not all their bonus stuff. >.>
Haha, whups, sorry, forgot you guys use Celsius! I really need to learn that system, seeing as everyone else uses it. >.< I can't even imagine -59C, even after 2 winters in the Midwest!!!! I also can't imagine 70 F being hot O.O Does it never get above, like, 25 C up where you live?
And smog is awful. I come from a place with tons of fog, but no smog, and I can never get used to it!

No problem, I can't really wrap my head around either system (although Celcius has always made more sense since water freezes at 0 rather than 32 or some other crazy number. XD)
Don't even try to imagine -59. It's not pleasant. Of course, in the prairies we get a dry cold which is supposedly mild compared to more humid coastal "wet colds". I hear that -5 in a wet cold is much worse than most dry colds. XD;
It probably gets pretty hot, but I'm usually on vacation elsewhere during the summer. It's brutal in August though. @_@ *looks* the record high for August is about 34.5 C and on average it's 22 C so that's...94 and 71 F respectively. XD By that time we've probably escaped to Victoria or somewhere more mild.

I dunno, for me the deciding factor is how WINDY it is! Like, it's supposedly about 0 C today in St. Louis, but the sun's shining and as long as the wind isn't blowing, it feels decently warm. But then the wind kicked up when I was going to lunch and I was shivering like crazy! I bet wet doesn't help though XD
Haha, escape while you caaaaan! Yeah, this summer I'm working here in MO so I'll be stuck in the 100-110 F degree mess of humidity, whee. >.>

Heh, well, if it helps, Chinese is famously hard to pronounce! My whole Phonetics class got schooled by the one Cantonese speaker when we were studying all the sounds in various Chinese dialects and even she couldn't pronounce all the other dialects' sounds to her own satisfaction. (Sounded fine to me but how would I know? XD)

Hapo57 In reply to chocoroco [2012-03-01 15:14:01 +0000 UTC]
Hahaha that's incredible! XD A lot of the Cantonese speakers in my Mandarin class got really frustrated and decided they like Cantonese better. XD I also see on youtube people comment on Mandarin dubs of disney music and say that the Cantonese sounds nicer and less "choppy", but I can't really tell the difference. XD
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
chocoroco In reply to Hapo57 [2012-03-01 17:07:25 +0000 UTC]
Lol, that's really bizarre because I think Cantonese has even more tones than Mandarin... or maybe I'm remembering wrong. Anyway, I can't tell, but I would think the more tones the "choppier" the language would be!
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Hapo57 In reply to chocoroco [2012-03-01 22:55:58 +0000 UTC]
I was under that impression too. I know Mandarin has four tones, and I think Cantonese has about eight. Yeah, I can see how that would make sense. The only logical explanation I can think of is that Cantonese has more "notes" so it's more musical and flows better in a sense, haha. Mandarin is a super standardized bureaucratic language, so I can see it being kind of terse.

chocoroco In reply to Hapo57 [2012-03-02 22:03:38 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I guess that makes sense. I've heard writing Cantonese songs is difficult thought because the lyrics have to match the melody! I can't even imagine how you'd get good at doing that...
