We had a really good makeup artist for that shoot, for one thing. The lighting was just right for another, and the model has naturally good skin. The rest is just dodging and burning. Somewhere on dA there’s a really good skin retouching tutorial that I found once. I’m not sure if I faved it, but if you search for skin retouching, it’ll probably come up. The gist of the technique is to take your RAW file and process it at three exposure values: a base exposure, +1 EV and -1 EV. You layer the +1 and -1 images over your base exposure in Photoshop with layer masks that have been filled with black (to completely hide them), then carefully paint in spots with white (using a soft-edge brush at a very low opacity) on the layer masks to even out the skin imperfections. It takes awhile (depending on how extensively I need to retouch the image, I can spend anywhere from 2 to 16 hours on a single photo) but it’s the most natural way I’ve found to do skin smoothing.

I’ve already gone through your gallery and faved a few pics. You’ve got a great eye, and I think you’ll do well. If you haven’t already, you might consider heading over to the Strobist blog. I learned a lot from there myself, just in the past year.
