I wanted a Canon 450D but... yeah, apparently the Canon 40D is better, so I'm going to get that one, I think.
And it's not even the body. It's the lenses right?

They made a 50D now, when is similar to the 40D, just newer and has more features. The 50D has Canon's latest image processor, Digic4.

I don't have a DSLR actually. I do have an SLR though, with a 50mm and a 80mm-200mm lens, so 2 lenses, but haven't used it yet. My other is a high-end point-and-shoot, which I'm actually selling right now.
Hmm... it's really hard to say, the 40D is slightly faster in terms of fps, but in my opinion the 50D is a little more powerful.
