Well, I guess this is the small short version of a rant |3Alright, so basically I've seen a lot of "original" characters that have the most COMMON life stories EVER USED. Like being a Sonic character's sibling, clone, child, or lover, OR they affiliate their characters with real Sonic characters, like they've fought and killed so-and-so. Hey people, here's a newflash - BACKSTORIES COUNT FOR ORIGINALITY!! PWNED!!

This is why I make my characters from my graffiti,nature etc. with no connection to the real set of characters.

The story is what makes the character original. You could have a recolor of Amy Rose, you look at the story, and it's most original thing yet. But that's what people don't focus on. The story matters a lot, but so do the looks of the character. Try not to recolor! Use a base! There's plenty of them! And if you can't draw, get someone else to draw the character for you. Get some imagination, would ya?!

I think one of the only exceptions to this is if you made it just for fun and you're not totally serious about it.

I do like to be serious on my fan characters. I sometimes continue their story and make it like a chapter book or even a whole series! That's what I'm doing with my fan character, Bethany the dark seedrain.

If a character has an incredibly intresting live story, then they tend to be pretty original- even if their already part of a fandom.
If they don't, then their unoriginal characters.
