Description Eidolons was my favourite cycle in Magic the Gathering ever (their looks, not their powers, duh), so I figured that a life counter made of Aurora Eidolon would be nice. It has its flaws, but again: first attempt. It's foil, by the way, only the picture doesn't show it.
There are several others under construction. (sneak peak: featuring Fury Charm, Kitsune Dawnblade, and Assembly-Worker)

have you tried to make any more?

I have two of them half-completed, maybe I'll find the time to finish them.

do you mind if I ask, how did you get the cards to stick together and how are you cutting them?

I explained it quite in detail just above you comment, please read back a little. I'd only like to add that I use the kind of glue they use for furniture and things, I don't really know it's name. But it certainly isn't normal household or modeling glue.

Hey, this is awesome!! How do you go about making one of these, cuz I'd love to make one for myself.

It's quite simple, really.
You only need a few things, the most important of which is az exacto knife (it's a tool that looks like a medical scalpel). With that, following the edge of the thing (character, landscape, etc) you want to be standing out, cut away the background. You can experiment with different number of 3D layers, the more the better. (This has only one.) You completely remove the text box of the card also.
When you have all the cards cut out, you simply glue them together with some strong glue (I think ordinary superglue won't do the trick), including two wires in the process which hold the life counting beads. Mine is quite a jury-rigged one, those wires are in fact staples. :S
That's quite it. Have fun!

That sounds simple enough, thank! How many cards did you use for the border, cuz it looks like there are a million cards in between, lol.

Not that much, but I honestly couldn't tell. Of course they don't have to be all the card in question, if you only want to make the whole thing (the "border") thicker, but not the main image to stand out more, you could use basic lands with the textbox and the image box cut out.

How did you use staples for the wire? What to use for wire is what I'm stuck on right now.

I straightened them, then bended a small part on each end under right angle, let's call these the "legs" of it. I punched two small holes on the border or the cards (already half assembled and glued), and inserted the "legs" into the holes. The legs make sure that the wire won't move sideways (or any ways). Then I cut out the parts of the following 1-2 cards which would be in conflict with the wire (where it would be above the wire's ends, and wouldn't lie flat on the surface of the other cards). After these 1-2 cards (you only need a few, depending on the thickness of the wire) you can resume gluing the rest of the cards (you shall have a little less than half the cards still remaining to be glued on) on as you did before installing the wires.
I hope it was clear, I couldn't describe it better. :/ If it's not, ask please!

Because of this life counter. I had never thought of making one with a pile of cards cut out. You're a genius, to my eyes.

U CUT A FOIL AURORA EIDOLON JUST TO DO THIS ?????

wtf Are You doing man ?!?!?!?!?

the idea is ok but the fact that u cut Foil Eidolon for that sucks

(that's what i think of it) - (just my honest opinion)

aequinox In reply to demonsweex [2009-05-14 15:45:56 +0000 UTC]

It's a foil common worth like half a dollar. And I've got another one. So I don't see the problem. I can't recommend that you browse the net for similar ones, there are seriously expensive cards cut likewise, so I'd save you from the heart attack.
