This picture of Team Shenkuu started out as a Random Contest entry on Neopets, where contestants were supposed to create a poster advertising/recruiting for their favorite Altador Cup III team. I chose Team Shenkuu, as I have since they joined in 2007, and turned out this very nice image, I think. The poster version actually had a made-up slogan for them as well as their team name and "Altador Cup 2008" on it.

Unfortunately, I didn't notice exactly when the contest ended, and finished the poster about two hours after submissions closed. The previous time I'd tried to enter, I'd noted that submissions closed Friday morning, and missed that deadline by about five minutes. This time, submissions closed Thursday afternoon. Go figure. Of course, that was after a week's extension, so I can't complain too much.

So I cropped off the slogan and other text (except for my username), and submitted this to the Art Gallery instead. It got in (yay!), and I actually ended up with a better prize than if I'd placed in the Random Contest (double-yay!).

I really like the effect I got on the fire Yooyu in the foreground there, as well as the perspective on the central character. And I had to replace one teammate after drawing him in the group because they'd apparently replaced their Koi character with the yellow Zafara on the bottom right this year. So I had to draw the new guy, then insert him into the existing lineart I'd done. Not too shabby, I think.

I used very simple shading that I reserve for color comics I do for Neopets (and maybe other things; we'll see), since it's not as vibrant as the shading I do in my other pieces. It works for comics and simple pictures, though.

TD: mechanical pencil and Staedtler pens on white cardstock, Adobe Illustrator (to LiveTrace my lineart) and Photoshop CS2 (to color). Approx. 7 hours.
