Description **Sorry about the watermarks- there have been too many cases of art being stolen lately **

This is the ninth Doctor- as soon as I saw him, I knew I had to draw him, but it took 12 weeks until we got a DVD, and I could get a screen-capture - none of the photos I could find on the net fitted what I wanted. I wanted him smiling, for one thing.
If parts of this look a little odd, that is because I had a reference only for the face- a reference from a shot inside the TARDIS. I moved him outside, using 2 photographs of the TARDIS as references for the background, a photograph of my mother with her arms folded for his arms, and another photograph of the Doctor in his leather jacket, in a different position, to get the jacket as accurate as I could.
Please try not to nit-pick *too* hard. I did my best, and, for what I had to work from, I think I did a pretty good job. I'm proud of it.

Materials: 0.5 mechanical pencil with B lead, 8B solid graphite pencil, blending stumps, tissues, cotton-buds, kneadable eraser, plastic eraser
Size: just slightly under A3
Time Taken: 20 hours, give or take

It so long since I started watching Dr Who (since well before the new series began, and I must have been about 4) so I don't remember who was my first Doctor. It must be nice to know.

^-^;; I'm a recent convert. I got into the older ones after the new series started. I definitely have favorites from all over.

There were reruns on tv when I was small, and my father always watched them, so I was introduced to it very early on, although I still haven't managed to see all of the episodes. I was in Year 12 when they were repeating the 2nd Doctor stories, and so tv just didn't happen.

That's really neat, though! You've seen so much more than I have! I'm jealous, hehe x3

Aaaaah, I loved Eccleston, it was very sad to see him go...

Absolutely amazing, and as someone said, very rare to find a picture of him smiling. Congrats on making such a delightful piece of art.

I was sad too. I grew up on classic Dr Who, so I wasn't expecting him to stay around forever, but I thought he'd do more than one season!

I'm glad you like this, thanks for the !

I'm always amazed by the fine work with the lights and shadows. How is it possible to draw precisely like that ?

Great job ! Woaw.

Alene In reply to DnKrow7 [2011-12-23 06:48:30 +0000 UTC]

It takes a bit of practice, and a lot of patience. You have to train yourself to see what's really there, and replicate it, without rushing anything (although that can be tempting ) I can take up to 50 hours on a portrait like this, it's no good wanting immediate results. Of course, all that goes out the window when I'm doing illustrations, but for portraits, it's just seeing the details and recreating them on paper (while also enhancing or minimising various parts) You might find my tutorial on contrast helpful: [link]

Thanks for the , I'm glad you like it!

Thanks for the explanations and the tutorial ! Sure my greatest problem is a lack of patience, ah ah. Once again, congrats !

This is very good! I love that you did him smiling, I have been looking everywhere for good screenshots so I could practice Eccleston's face, but Nine is pretty hard to find (at least in a decent quality and with an expression that would be interesting to draw).

Anyway, you're rightfully proud of this picture. And nothing looks odd about it, despite the jumble of references used, you managed to make everything match perfectly.

Alene In reply to Olooriel [2011-06-10 05:55:25 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much. I find the Dr Who publicity photos never capture exactly what I want – so I find screenshots are a much better option. I've got better at piecing pictures together from multiple refs over the years, too. It takes a little practice to work from screenshots, but I think it's worth it.
Thanks so much for the , I'm glad you like it!
