Description This is a piece done for my father, who adores the British TV show "Last of the Summer Wine". Some years ago, while we were holidaying in England, he saw a painting of this character, but did not buy it, and has regretted this ever since. I promised him that as soon as I had the necessary skills, and a good reference, I would do him my own portrait, and this is what you see here, some 9 years after that promise was made (after all, it had to be good )

So, I give you Bill Owens, in the guise of Compo, the cheeky little man from "Last of the Summer Wine". Bill died a few years ago, as far as I am aware, but the show is still running (although not in Australia)
I am extremely pleased with this piece, which is not in my usual style. I think the result is well up to the standard that my father could wish for.
Please bear in mind that this piece is going to be framed, and I have no real intention of working further on it, as I dod not wish to run the risk of 'over-defining' it. If there is something that *really* stands out as requiring my attention, however, please tell me. All comments are, of course, extremely welcome.

Time taken: about 10 hours
approx 30cm x 23cm on A3 sketching paper
B lead, 0.5 mechanical pencil, 6B graphite and 4B and 5B lead pencils. Tissues and blending stumps were used to reduce the focus in the background, but there is no smudging on the figure.
levels adjusted and border added in Photoshop.

Thank you. It is indeed still up on the wall, along with a few more of my father's favourite esoteric entertainers.

I wonder what he used to keep in that matchbox he always carried around?

I always thought he kept a spider in there, but it could have been anything!

Awesome picture, BTW!

Your attention to detail is sublime, even down to the tiny threads in Compo's hat !! Absolutely astounding work!

I can't thank you enough for sharing this with us! You've really captured Bill's character!

Good old Compo! The show is still running but it lacks something without Compo being there. They had to bring in two people to replace him.

Peter Sallis, thats Cleggy or Wallace ((from Wallace and Gromit)), said he wants to go like Compo did, still part of the Last of the Summer Wine.

You have done a fantastic job with this looks exactly like him.

Alene In reply to whitetiger01 [2007-05-12 17:52:18 +0000 UTC]

I should think it would have lost something - he was such a big part of the show as a whole.

I'm so glad you like this, thankyou, and thanks for the !

They certainly haven't shown it in Australia for years - we only have a couple of extremely fuzzy videos. It's a pity, as I think the series is still going.

Rexyf In reply to Alene [2007-11-09 06:21:08 +0000 UTC]

I hope you don't mind me intruding on the conversation, but the show is still ongoing and is actually the longest running sit-com in the world. I also think it lost something when Compo passed on. A shame, but I suppose there's nothing to be done about it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Alene In reply to Rexyf [2007-11-09 18:51:45 +0000 UTC]

That's certainly something, isn't it? It's odd, though, how difficult it is to find good promotional photographs for it - at least, that was the case when I did this picture.
Is Cleggy still in the show, do you know?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rexyf In reply to Alene [2007-11-09 22:52:57 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it's very difficult, though the series is now available on dvd, and I understand the setting of Holmfirth is now something of a miniature tourist mecca, I sure you could find merchandise there. Yes, Cleggy is still there, With the third man still being Truly of the Yard. I believe they've placed that fellow who believed himself to be a descendant of Robin-Hood in Compos position, not an exact match, but it's about the closest anyone's going to get.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Alene In reply to Rexyf [2007-11-10 01:00:52 +0000 UTC]

True, but not easy to get said merchandice when one is in Australia! But my father will certainly be interested to know that it is now avaliable on DVD - all he has is a few fuzzy videos.

Rexyf In reply to Alene [2007-11-10 03:05:47 +0000 UTC]

I can understand that dillemma, seeing as I'm in Oklahoma. Our public broadcasting service displays it on weeknights, around 11 o'clock. I've been thinking about getting the dvd set for my own father as a Christmas gift, but might get him some John Wayne movies instead.

Alene In reply to Rexyf [2007-11-11 04:05:02 +0000 UTC]

At least you can see it - it hasn't been shown here in my memory, so probably for at least 16-17 years, if not more. I don't mind, but it's sad for those who would actually really like to see it.

Rexyf In reply to Alene [2007-11-11 04:57:03 +0000 UTC]

Understandable, I haven't seen Waiting for God, another Brit-Com in years, I had grown rather fond of it, Oh well. I remembered the name of that Robin Hood fellow, Billy Hardcastle.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Alene In reply to Rexyf [2007-11-11 14:41:26 +0000 UTC]

Heh, we don't get that one either. The ABC usually reruns an old britcom on Saturday at about 6 - they'd been doing Goodnight Sweetheart for ages, and then switched to Executive Stress. But with what is basically a half-hour slot once a week, we don't get much. We do get the newer series though - Dr Who, New Tricks, Taggart, stuff like that, after about 6 months, so that keeps us happy.
