Here are some examples of preliminary environment examples I use in my concept art class.These are done pretty quickly, as there is no color and not much detail, the most important thing being value and composition.

These are quite useful. I think I will definitely be doing thumb studies like this for my next piece. Always knew that I should... but was lazy. These just convince me that I should stop being lazy and make the time to do value studies : )
