Description Here's how I did this one....obviously just the basics, but these are the major steps I took on this one. I borrow ideas from Ryan Church and Sparth, so if those guys interest you, check 'em out!

So you always start out in B&W, then add layers with tints/colors?

On the left background, how did you get those long strokes? Was it with the regular brush?

AlexRuizArt In reply to jaywalkerprodigy [2007-03-28 02:15:23 +0000 UTC]

yeah, I think I used a basic brush for those.....but the main technique there is to use your arm to make long strokes.....it's a little tricky at first, but practice makes perfect!

Great tut, tarrzan - doesn't make your work any less impressive ...
I have a couple of Ryan Church's Gnomon DVD's, but I've been thinking of buying Christian Schurer's next - looks like he's using a very different technique from Ryan's - can you recommend it?

And certainly quite a few of them are by tarrzan.

Yehay, another tutorial, you are spoiling us! I was just analyzing that painting, trying to work out how you pulled it all together. Taking it all in and soaking it all up! It's interesting to study artists such as 'yourself', Ryan church and Android Jones, and i've decided to look back in time at Joseph Turner' paintings as he seemed to use colour in a similiar way

The-Donut-Truck [2007-03-26 21:19:16 +0000 UTC]

These simple tutorials of your process, and the monitor shots and such are aways fascinating to me.

On step 2, what method do you use to apply a color overlay (if it can be stated simply). I do have some very basic working knowledge about layers and such, but are you using tinted gells of multiple colors, monotone, or simply painted layers? I trying to picture it. It looks like the way that I sometimes do things with traditional oil or acrylic - colored washs or glazes over a monochrome underpainting. Same thing?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AlexRuizArt In reply to The-Donut-Truck [2007-03-26 22:18:18 +0000 UTC]

...yes mr. donut, color and multiply, as well as overlay, are like wash layers. You dont lose your 'underpainting', none of your established values or lines become greatly affected. So just experiment with these, it's really the best way to find out.....then after much repetition, you'll have it nailed!

AlexRuizArt In reply to ArrinKirr [2007-03-26 19:42:51 +0000 UTC]

Well, as mentioned in the tutorial, these are the broad steps I took on this piece....it'd take me too long to put every step But yes, certain theories( color, depth, linear) are assumed.....those can all be learned through Ryan Church and Christian Schurer dvd's from Gnomon.
