Description “Never pick a fight with people who buy ink by the barrel.”
-Mark Twain

This lovely lady here is Ink, one of ~Jazz-Rhythm ’s characters. And if R1 is any indication, you most definitely do not want to be picking a fight with her. @_@ Besides the fact that I’m really fond of her design, I chose her for a very particular reason: her skin is white, which forces me to actually look at my color choices instead of doing whatever it is I do by default when painting skin. And I can’t overdo it either, since the skin still has to look like it’s white in the end.

One of the many things I want to practice this summer is my use of color because let’s face it, the color range in some of my paintings makes it look like I suffer from a mild to moderate case of chromophobia. Alternatively, they look like I barfed rainbows all over the canvas. I’m also getting a bit tired of the way I paint now, so I'm trying to develop a style that a) is more efficient and b) doesn’t look completely overworked. So I’m going to do it by stealing other people’s characters to use as my guinea pigs, ohohoho.

I find Ink to be one of Jazzy’s most compelling and mysterious characters so far, and no matter what the results of AATR are, I’d like to know more about where she plan to take her. (I’ve got some theories about that, especially with regard to the way she was designed, buuuut I’ll keep those to myself for now in case I’m completely off the mark. ; )

Please let me know what you think: what you like and what you think I should work on. Whatever free time I have this summer is going towards practice, practice, and practice, so I’d appreciate critique!

I think this is my favourite character portrait by you to date. Her pale face with the black designs looks really striking, and the pose you've chosen gives her a huge amount of personality. She looks cautious, but curious.

Thank you! I suppose a lot of the credit should go to get creator, since all I did was put my own spin on her design.

B''awwwwwwwtthiiissssiiiiisssssooooooobbbbeeeauuuttiiffuuulll.
And I'm not even the owner of the character! XD
I absolutely love how you've captured her; yes, the more speed-paint feel is evident, but it gives it such a nice texture! I agree, painting skin can be really annoying and challenging, but I love how you balanced out the colours! The fluffy colour is also quite realistic and the feathers...and the hair.

Argh, just everything about it is gorgeous. X3

My only comment would be that the tattoos seem flat against the skin....but I guess that's good too because then they stand out better. :3

Ahhh, thank you so much! A couple of other people have mentioned how the markings look flat. I was actually going for a flat look as a stylistic choice (I used pure black, which I usually don't in paintings), but I guess it wasn't obvious enough that it was intentional. Good to know, so thanks for saying so!

I poked through your gallery since I suspected you were also in AATR, and I'd love to see where your story goes. Good luck!

Welcome!

Oh, that's okay. I had a feeling it was done on purpose, I was just curious. It's not necessarily a mistake if it's meant to be like that, it was just something I was interested in knowing.

Thank you! :3 Not going anywhere with it anymore, in terms of rounds, but I'll see if I can still cook up some 'observer' type stuff.

Ah, AATR is a tough. Still, congrats for finishing as much as you did! That's one intense OCT. Spectator stuff is always fun--takes a lot of the pressure off, too.

I reckon you attempted speedpainting the white fuzzz? I think that worked particularly well.

I think the tattoos (i think they are tattoos?) beneath the eyes and on the neck look a little flat and 2D against a very variant 3D skin. even black markings on skin have variations in light. i wouldn't say "add shine" but definitely color variations in the tattoo would help. also maybe using a less true black, since it is a marking on skin, and having the skin beneath it makes it less black than black (like, even the shadows of her skin never reach that dark of a color).

Yup, I tried to spend the least amount of time on the fur while still making it look like fur. c:

Oh, the markings are all black as a stylistic choice. Though I guess if they are reading as a failed attempt to paint tattoos I should figure out a way to make it clearer. I don't actually know if they are tattoos, since I wouldn't call Ink human, soooo.

Whoooooooooooooah, holy crap man this looks terrific! Your colors look nice to me though, particularly the purple hues you used to shade this, ohman and your paintings always have this really... slick? clean? feel to them, so~ ahhh~ <3

I guess you could play more with subtly green and blue hues, though...? I'm really not very good at knowing what to do with colors either though so-! Idk! ;-;

I was actually trying to be a bit looser with this painting, haha. I used chunkier and more opaque brushes too. It might be fact that I'm using Photoshop that's making my paintings look so 'clean'? Or maybe I'm just so OCD that any attempt to be less so still looks very neat...

I was thinking about adding more colors to the shadows but then I was afraid that that would start looking like I just put in all the colors I could think of. It's difficult to figure out what's the right balance, gah. how do u color???
