Description For `TouchedVenus 's Goddess of Spring contest: [link]

Featured: [link] [link]

Oh, and since this is an OC contest I should probably include here that this is my character Cheryl. I've used her in a few other pieces before. She's a lot of fun to paint (though I promise I'll paint something else next time, haha).

Some of the species here are made up, some are based off of existing ones. There's a common kingfisher, orange luna moth, scarab beetle, dogwood, and magnolia. The dragonfly is modeled off an existing species but I couldn't identify exactly which. I chose each of the animals for a particular symbolic reason.
And I chose the flowers because they were pretty.

My first instinct for the prompt was to do something bright and cheery with flowers and butterflies and robins, but in the end I decided on something subtler: darker earthy tones instead of bright ones, and symbols of spring that were less, well, generic. I didn't want it to be all about life and sunshine, either--moths and scarabs carry connotations of death, which is as much a part of nature and spring as is the renewal of life.

Sorry for the re-upload! This is the final cleaned-up version. Let me know if this shows up too dark on anybody's monitor.

Texture from Lost and Taken .

I can tell a lot of thought and effort went into this piece - she looks lovely, and the piece as a whole is beautiful as well. The wings of the dragonfly and smaller moth are so detailed...

Really beautiful work, and I hope you at least place in the contest

Ahh, thank you! I had the idea in my mind for a while--it felt great to finally sit down and be able to put it on paper, so to speak. And I'm glad the work I put into the details showed.

I managed to place first, actually! I'm super pleased about that, especially since I was up against some stiff competition.

I know how that is! Such a great feeling when you get the idea out where you can see it ;3

Congratulations! All that hard work and care payed off

Absolutely wonderful. I love all the soft, earthy colours and the way her eyes really stand out. The antlers changing to branches is a lovely concept.

It was one of those ideas that got stuck in my head that I finally had to get down (even at the cost of some sleep, haha). Your words are always so encouraging--thank you!

Pah! Artists do not need sleep!

And no problem at all. Thanks for producing lovely art.

Beautiful! Some comments: I wish the background was a bit brighter/lighter, especially near the bottom of the drawing. This would really make her "pop" more, because right now the rich brown color of her skin and the dark olive green of the background are kind of pulling together. Also, her hand seems a bit small to me, but sadly there's probably not an easy way to fix that, just something to think about for next time!
Other than that, though, lovely details and general composition

Thank you so much for your thoughtful comments. I agree that I could do more to make her stand out from the background, and you're right--the hand is a little too small. I'll definitely keep your advice in mind when I do future paintings!

Sweet! Whenever I draw hands I press my own hand to my face to make sure the size is right (usually the length of the hand is slightly over chin-to-eyebrow distance) but it inevitably ends up looking off >_< Gaaah, hands!

Haha, I do the same thing! Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Those tricky hands.

Beautiful work my friend, you should listen to Primavera by Ludovic Einaudi...a great instrumental piece of music. As inspiring as your artwork here.

Aha yes, one of my favorite things about digital art and layers is that you can paint transparent things without having to worry about screwing up. @_@
