The smoke was thick and I was careful as I got closer, it would be too easy to step on someone that small in all this mess. The fire was close and as I peeked over the trees I saw the terrified little face, her face wet with tears and smeared with ash. There was no where for her to go and only one option. With the pain of touching that boy the other night still fresh in my mind I knew what I was going to have to do and I wasn't thrilled with the idea. I wasn't a fan of picking up people, it was nerve wracking. Holding a life literally in your hands. They were always trying to escape and slip through your fingers and you had to hold tighter and how do you know how tight is too tight? I really didn't want to pick her up, but what choice did I have? It's not like I could leave her here to cook or suffocate. I tried my best to stay calm as I slowly reached down toward her.
