Actually, it's a Guy Fawkes mask, and they were around for a long time before V for Vendetta came out. V for Vendetta used it because Guy Fawkes was a guy that attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament and V was a guy who blew up the Houses of Parliament and so it was a connection and rather symbolic.
Actually, it's still kind of symbolic here because they're going against the government as well
