I love this page, maybe a bit more than some of the others! You just did a fantastic job at showing all the colors that real lions vary in. ALL the lions you've put in this comic have special colors, which makes them easier to recognize and identify them. All this action so far is pretty intense and making it hard to stay patient and wait for the next page! I have to say, it seems you've done this in colored pencil, am I right? Its actually hard to tell what you did to draw this comic so far, and I have to say; You do an amazing job at covering up all the white. [If you really DID use colored pencils that is]
Its actually pretty funny seeing how the lions mistake a kind, more happy leopard for a [What sounds like] rude and mean one.
This has taken us SO far into the story since the first page! I'm amazed, and also you take time [And leave those darned cliffhangers; HOW DARE YOU XD] to get to a certain and very exciting point.
I have to say; Actually... WE [All your readers, followers, friends, etc.] have to say thank you! You take up probably PRECIOUS time in your life, just to post and make us all happy! We don't know whats going on in your life, like if your an age where its hard for you or your going through something tough... Just know that us, we support you no matter what your going through. AND I MEAN THAT!

Thank you, SO much! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>

I'm curious, how do you pronounce Chui? Is it pronounced like "chew" or is it said like "chee"? Or...like "chewy"? Or am I just completely wrong with all of these?

Could be the lionesses are daughters. Baba means father, or grandfather in many languages. But its also a generally endearing term, so could be applied different ways

Guys. This isn't the Lion King. Even if the lions figured out that Africa wasn't Chui (which I doubt they can even tell the difference, truly), do you really think they're going to care? Just...chill out and have a conversation over the misunderstanding? The whole reason zebras evolved all stripy was to take advantage of lions' terrible vision; they can't tell where one zebra ends and another begins when they all stand close together, so how should they be able to tell the difference between a rival species they only interact with competitively? Why should they care to? Also a thing to note, cat scenting ability may be better than ours, but it's nowhere close to that of canines'. They probably can't even smell Africa, perhaps aside from her fear.

This is Big Cat Diaries. Lions see a leopard, they kill the leopard. It doesn't matter who the leopard is. Africa claims she isn't a threat, but how are they meant to trust her when it's a fact of life that big cats kill each others' young all the time? Africa grew up relatively sheltered as well, which I think is another thing people aren't realizing. She looked up to Nadira growing up, an open-minded gazelle, a prey animal that generally gets along with other prey animals, even across species. As the protagonist, Africa's view influences the audience's view, and that view happens to be pretty idealistic. Africa expects the lions to see reason, therefor so do we.

But they aren't going to. They physically can't, and even they could, they wouldn't.

(Not meant to be attacking anybody, just trying to clear up all the panic down below! )

what you said is true and all, but since this is a comic, people will expect things differently. if this was real life, no one would think otherwise.
even if some of the real life rules are implied on this comic, it's not to the same extent. i mean, you don't see leopards negotiating with lions in the documentary, right? we don't view real life the same way we view fiction. i - for one - am appalled at how dumb these lions are XD

THANK YOU <3
I hate to be that person, but not every character has to be the sharpest pencil in the crayon box, and I love that <3
I designed the lions to be life-like: lazy, bossy, brutish and with quite the low IQ (at least some of them )
That doesn't make them any less fit to filling their ecological niche.
Are they still fully fledged apex predators? Why yes, they are!
Do they come off as reasonable and considering of others? Absolutely not! Why should they? XD

I really love this page! The facial expressions are very well done, and the coloring is really vibrant!

Also, to people who keep asking why they don't regonize that Africa is female and therefore not Chui... I saw this on a national geographic documentary that tried to decipher why a male lion killed a female cheetah and then attempted to hunt down the three male cheetah that had been swarming her in an attempt to mate, when lions normally live pretty peacefully alongside cheetah's since they steal a cheetah's kill pretty often, and cheetah's pose no physical threat as a lion outmatches them in strength and body size. While debating this they also touched on lion and leopard rivalry, and wondered if the lion might've been incapabale of seeing the difference between a cheetah and a leopard. Lions delibiretely hunt down leopards, and in rare cases even cheetah's. There's been research done on this, and as leopards and lions compete for both territory and prey, it is not uncommon for either to go after each others cubs. Lions will attack and kill a leopard given the chance in order to protect their cubs and to get rid of competition, and vice versa. It is theorised that lions can't see the difference between spotted cats, though I'm not sure this has been proven yet. I don't know if this is accurate or not, but to me it makes sense and seems logical enough. It's no different than lions viciously killing any hyena they can get their paws on without risking their own hide.

I was wondering the same thing about being confused with Chui when Africa is so much leaner. But I would assume that this pride hardly ever see Leopards in their territory so, they're going to assume it's the only one they've ever met coming back to a place he's familiar with? They possibly can't tell the differences between Males and Females either if Chui is the only one they've seen.

Can't wait to find out what he's done to anger them so much xD

What I don't get is how they mistake her for Chui when they look very different. She has a different body shape compared to him (for example, she is a bit leaner while Chui is larger and more muscled) He also has a collar on his neck. Unless the lions met him when he was younger and before he got the collar and when he was a bit smaller, in that case it makes more sense. I'm not trying to be rude though, I really enjoy reading this comic. Hopefully Africa can get out of this one without anyone getting hurt

Lol that casanova xD It's cute and funny how you interpreted the Prides society as more sentient creatures. I can imagine if could be interesting or even a bit hard to really interpret this more human-ish

I would like to know your take on why they don't really ditinquish male or female leopards. I would assume they'd smell an animals' sex and know whether it is male or female.. How did you interpret this? :3

Diluculi In reply to 10animallover10 [2018-02-07 14:42:14 +0000 UTC]

I always assumed the lions do not care that much. I mean, surely scents can be disguised (and they had been in that really salty and probably smelly mud before) and it could be some kind of "racism" towards leopards, claiming they all look the same to a lion?

Perhaps Chui wasn't wearing it yet? When the zebras were at the lake and attacked by Chui, he was young and didn't have the collar on. Hmmmm
